NYU Wins Seventh Consecutive Match, Sweeps Mt. St. Vincent

From NYU Athletics

The New York University women's volleyball team won its seventh-straight match, defeating the College of Mount Saint Vincent in three sets on Friday, September 23, at NYU's Brooklyn Athletic Facility in Brooklyn, NY.

The Violets (11-3) have now won 11 of their last 12 matches.

NYU scored the first three points of the opening set and never trailed. However, the Dolphins (3-9) did rally for ties at 7-7, 8-8 and 9 -9. The Violets then used a 5-0 run to take the lead for good. They expanded their advantage to a set-high 10 points, 25-15, on Gretchen Cash's kill to close out the frame.

The Violets opened the second set by again scoring the first three points. And, once again, Mount Saint Vincent was able to tie the match, this time at 4-4. However, NYU then went on a 9-4 run to open a five-point lead. The Dolphins managed to pull within one, 14-13, but the Violets responded with an 8-1 streak to take its biggest lead of the set, 22-14. The teams then exchanged points until Rayne Ellis' kill sealed the 25-17 win for NYU.

Mount Saint Vincent took its first (and only) lead of the match by scoring the first point of the final set. However, it was short-lived as the Violets scored the next five points and went on to lead by as many as nine before winning the final set 25-18.

"Our chemistry has gotten better and our players feel more comfortable together," said NYU Head Coach Jolie Ward. "It allows us to see more of a fluid transition and motion on the court. We're definitely getting much more cohesive."

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

- Rayne Ellis had a match-high 10 kills.

"Rayne has definitely become a number one offense threat for us," Ward explained.

- Katie Goyette led all players with 21 assists.

- Stephanie Mao (16) and Annie Singh (10) each had double-digit digs for the Violets. Singh also had a match-high three service aces.

"I think our depth has really served us well so far this season," Ward said. "They have all been performing consistently on on the court, and that will be important as we get into conference play."
