Chicago Tops Carroll 3-0 and Carthage 3-1

The University of Chicago volleyball team kept its run of good play rolling with a 3-0 win over Carroll University and a 3-1 victory against Carthage College at the Carthage Invite on Saturday.

The Maroons (5-4 record) won for the fourth time in five matches. The Pioneers fell to 4-7 and the Lady Reds dropped to 6-5.

At the end of the competition, three Maroons were named to the Carthage Invite All-Tournament Team – sophomore rightside hitter Sarah Muisenga, senior setter Erin Risk and sophomore outside hitter Audrey Scrafford.


UChicago 3, Carroll 0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-19)

The Maroons came out strong by hitting .257 in the first set. An 8-0 run put them up 15-7, which included three-straight kills by freshman middle hitter Anne Marie Stifter. A kill and two service aces in-a-row by Muisenga made the score 20-11 and UChicago took the set handily, 25-15.

UChicago stayed hot in the second set by scoring the opening six points. Risk served up three-consecutive aces during the run. The Pioneers eventually rallied back to tie the score at 13-13, but the Maroons quickly put the comeback to bed with an 8-0 stretch. UChicago won the set 25-19.

The two teams exchanged early runs, with UChicago going up 6-1 and Carroll pulling to within 6-5. Another Maroon 6-1 run put the match in their control and the victory was secured at 25-19.

UChicago hit for a .184 percentage (37 kills, 16 errors, 114 attempts) while also adding 58 digs, two blocks, nine aces and seven service errors. Carroll was held to only a .068 hitting percentage (24-17-103) with 50 digs, seven blocks, four aces and seven service errors.

Carthage 3, UChicago 1 (25-23, 22-25, 25-18, 25-18)

In the final match against the hosts, UChicago posted its most efficient set of the day, hitting .293 in the opener. The back-and-forth affair saw Carthage take a 16-15 lead before UChicago reeled off five-straight points to take the advantage and eventually the set, 25-23.

A close second set went to the Lady Reds, who scored three of the final four points to even the match, 25-22. In the third set, the Maroons found themselves trailing 11-9 before producing a seismic shift of advantage. A 13-3 run by the visitors included four kills by Muisenga and took the air of Carthage's sails. UChicago grabbed the set 25-18 to go up 2-1.

The Maroons led wire-to-wire in the fourth set, jumping ahead 7-2 and never letting up. They maintained a lead of at least four points the rest of the way to clinch the match victory, 25-18.

Risk tied a season high with 43 assists and freshman outside hitter Anabella Pinton posted a new career-high of 13 kills. Scrafford tied Pinton for the kills lead (13) and Muisenga (11 kills, 15 digs) recorded her seventh double-double of the season. Senior libero Mary Claire Tuohy led the defense with 26 digs.

For the match, UChicago hit .198 (50-17-167). The totals included 89 digs, eight blocks, four aces and eight service errors. It was the second-highest block total of the season for the Maroons.

On the other side, Carthage hit .110 (46-27-172) with 87 digs, four blocks, five aces and nine service errors.
