Maroons Keep Rolling in UAA Play With Wins Over NYU and Emory

The University of Chicago volleyball team kept its hot streak in conference play rolling with a pair of wins over New York University and Emory University at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Round Robin #2 on Saturday.

The Maroons improved to 13-7 overall and 5-0 in UAA contests. The Violets dropped to 13-9 and 0-5 UAA. The No. 6-ranked Eagles fell to 19-4 and 4-1 UAA.


UChicago 3, NYU 0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-16)

UChicago jumped all over its first opponent of the day NYU with a three-set sweep. After a narrow 9-8 lead in the first set, the Maroons went on a 16-7 closing run to take the game, 25-15. UChicago found itself down 8-6 in the second set and then tore off again to take the second by an identical 25-15 score. The team made its move in the latter half of the third set once more and finished off at 25-16.

UChicago was efficient throughout, hitting for a .309 percent (46 kills, 12 errors, 110 attempts). On the other side of the net, the Violets were limited to a .028 hitting percentage (20-17-107). Sophomore outside hitter Audrey Scrafford and sophomore rightside hitter Sarah Muisenga combined for 26 kills and a .339 hitting percentage.

UChicago 3, Emory 1 (18-25, 25-22, 25-20, 27-25)

In the second match of the day, the Maroons upset a nationally-ranked UAA foe for the third time this season. They also snapped a five-match losing streak to Emory.

Emory's first set went smoothly jumping out to a 9-3 lead and never looking back to win 25-18. UChicago was limited to a .083 hitting percentage in the game. But the Maroons turned that right back around, swinging at a .364 clip in the second set and a .324 rate in the third. They scored the final four points of the third set on kills, with three provided by Muisenga. UChicago pulled away in the fourth set late and denied a rally by the Eagles to close out the victory, 27-25.

UChicago hit .227 (54-22-141) with 69 digs, while Emory hit .215 (52-21-144) with 59 digs. Freshman middle hitter Madison Pearson was a force all match with 14 kills on only 18 attempts. She was matched in kills by freshman outside hitter Anabella Pinton. Scrafford and Muisenga both had 11 kills. Senior setter Erin Risk handed out 44 assists and senior libero Mary Claire Tuohy racked up 27 digs.
