Chicago Wraps Up UAA Round Robin #2 With Two Wins; Maroons Earn Top Seed for UAA Volleyball Championship

The University of Chicago volleyball team concluded University Athletic Association (UAA) Round Robin #2 with matching 3-1 wins against University of Rochester and Case Western Reserve University on Sunday.

The Maroons (15-7) moved to a perfect 7-0 against UAA opponents and clinched the No. 1 seed in November's UAA Championship. The Yellowjackets fell to 18-8 (3-3 UAA) and the Spartans dropped to 15-8 (2-5 UAA).

UChicago 3, Rochester 1 (25-18, 11-25, 25-20, 25-19)

The Maroons caught fire in the first set versus Rochester. UChicago scored 12 of 13 points to break things open and go up 20-9. Sophomore outside hitter Audrey Scrafford kick started the charge with three-straight kills. Rochester answered with seven-straight points of its own, but UChicago's lead proved too large en route to a 25-18 win.

The second set went against UChicago right from the get-go and Rochester breezed to 25-11 behind a .455 hitting percentage. The Maroons hit -.040 in that set.

UChicago found itself trailing in the third set before six points in-a-row turned the tide. The 25-20 victory put the Maroons a set up on the Yellowjackets. The fourth set saw the Maroons close effectively as a six-point run late put away the match, 25-19.

UChicago posted a .194 hitting percentage (41 kills, 17 errors, 124 attempts), while Rochester hit .148 (43-25-122) and scored 13 aces. Sophomore rightside hitter Sarah Muisenga (12) and freshman outside hitter Anabella Pinton (11) both broke into double digits in kills. Senior libero Mary Claire Tuohy dug up 20 balls defensively.

UChicago 3, CWRU 1 (21-25, 25-19, 25-22, 25-18)

The final opponent of the weekend was Case Western Reserve. The Spartans took the opening set 25-21, pulling away after the score was tied 14-14. CWRU then went ahead 6-3 in the second set before UChicago came back to tie at 10-10. A 7-0 run put the Maroons firmly in control and they evened up the match by seizing the second set, 25-19.

A 14-6 run by the Maroons in the third set staked them to a 19-12 lead. CWRU pulled to within two points on several occasions late. But Scrafford scored the kill at 25-22.

The Spartans seized the opening five points of set number four. However, UChicago would not be denied, as the team tied it up at 8-8 and eventually finished off the victory 25-18. The Maroons were efficient on offense and hit over .300 in the second, third and fourth sets.

For the match, UChicago hit .289 as team (60-17-149) and served up 10 aces. CWRU posted a .262 hitting percentage (54-17-141) with nine blocks.

Scrafford was the kill leader with 17 while Muisenga and Pinton equaled each other with 15 kills. Senior setter Erin Riskposted 47 assists and 12 digs, while Tuohy tallied 17 digs.
