Yellowjackets Move to 9-4 After Sweep Over Buffalo State

Rochester overcame some inconsistent hitting in the second set and the early part of the third to post a 3-0 women's volleyball victory over Buffalo State College on Tuesday evening.

The Yellowjackets ran to a 25-10 win in the first set, battled back to seize the second set, 26-24, and then claimed the third set, 25-17. Rochester improved to 9-4 overall. Buffalo State is 5-9.

Five players had four or more kills for Rochester. Alara Kocak and Shira Katz had four kills. Alexandra Nelligan had five kills. Alexander Goldman had eight kills, and Clara Martinez had 11 kills.

The dig leader for the Yellowjackets was Meghan Connor with 13. She also had two assists and one ace. Courtney Vidovich had seven digs. Katz had five. Aimee Kohler had four. She led Rochester with 34 assists. Vidovich had three aces. Kate Korslund and Sara Apanavicius had two apiece. Connor, Kohler, and Nina Baek each had one.

UR had six total blocks – one solo (by Martinez) and 10 block assists: three apiece by Goldman and Martinez, two by Beth Ghyzel, one each for Kohler and Katz.

The Buffalo State kill leader was Riley Chapman with five. Lauren Hansen and Bryanna Fisher had four each. Allie Harford had three kills. Katherine Marte had 18 assists. Marte and Victoria Rigler dug six balls each. Hansen had five digs.

Rochester opened the first game on a 10-0 run. The Yellowjackets hit .650 (13 kills in 20 attacks). In the second game, Rochester had 14 kills, but nine attack errors and wound up hitting .122.  Buffalo State regrouped and led, 8-3, before Rochester cut it to 8-10. UR nipped away, finally getting within 17-16.  BSC used a kill from Fisher, two aces by Chapman (she had a match-leading total of four), and a Rochester attack error to put the Bengals ahead, 21-16.
 
Vidovich served five straight points – a mixture of two kills from Nelligan, one from Martinez, and a pair of aces to knot it at 21-21. BSC moved in front, 24-21, before Rochester rallied with five straight points. Martinez was successful on back to back attacks to seal the comeback win.
