Yellowjackets Top St. John Fisher, SUNY Poly, Move Record to 5-1

Rochester ran its women's volleyball record to 5-1 (with all five wins consecutively) after defeating both St. John Fisher and SUNY Poly, 3-0, on the first night of the UR Volleyball Invitational.

The Yellowjackets held off Fisher, 25-21, 25-20, 25-17, in the first match of the day. In their second match, the Yellowjackets had to rally to pull out the first game (29-27), but wont he second set 25-16, and then rode a  strong hitting performance (.448) to win the third game, 25-13. 

After the loss to Rochester, St. John Fisher was 2-4. SUNY Poly's record was 3-2 after the game vs. UR. 

Shira Katz led the way in the Fisher match with 13 kills. She added six digs and two block assists. Alexandra Goldman had seven kills and two block assists. Clara Martinez had six kills and Beth Ghyzel had four. Meg Connor registered 23 digs and Courtney Vidovich dug nine balls. Audrey Goldfarb had five digs.

Aime Kohler and Goldfarb combined for 34 assists. Kohler had 23 assists to accompany three service aces. Goldfarb had 11 assists.

In the second match, the Yellowjackets couldn't get their hitting untracked early in the first set. Poly pulled away from a 13-12 lead with a 6-1 burst, built on two attack errors by Rochester and four kills by Poly. That rip opened a 19-13 Poly lead. Rochester got kills from Martinez and Kate Korslund plus three attack errors by the Wildcats to close within 19-18.

The Poly lead stretched to four, 23-19, before Rochester ran off five straight points. The score was tied at 23, 24, 25, 26, and 27. The Yellowjackets finally scored back to back points to nail down the win. The 28th point came on a service error and the winner was a kill by Korslund.

Rochester used a 16-5 burst in the second set to take command at 20-10 and went on to the nine-point victory. The Yellowjackets went on top early in the third set, scoring the first seven points.

Katz, Martinez, and Korslund all finished with eight kills. Rochester's leader in the category against SUNY Poly was Ghyzel, who had nine. Martinez added two blocks and Goldman had one (to accompany five kills). Goldfarb led with 22 assists. Kohler chipped in 15 plus a block assist. Nina Baek had eight digs and four aces. Connor had 18 digs.
