#10 Carnegie Mellon Defeats Brandeis and #4 Emory to Earn Top Seed for UAA Volleyball Championship

The Carnegie Mellon University women's volleyball team, ranked 10th nationally, continued its historic season with two more wins on Sunday afternoon at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Round Robin #2 hosted by the University of Chicago. The Tartans opened the day with a 3-0 win against Brandeis University and then closed play with a 3-2 win over fourth-ranked Emory University to improve to 22-1 overall and 6-1 in UAA play.

The Tartans defeated Brandeis by the scores of 25-13, 25-18 and 25-21. Junior Lauren Mueller (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown STEM Academy) led Carnegie Mellon with 14 kills while sophomore Sahara Aqui (Miramar, Fla./Archbishop McCarthy) recorded nine while hitting .471. Sophomore Maia So-Holloway (Oakland, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral) handed out 28 assists and junior Amanda Thiele(Lakeland, Fla./George Jenkins) had 10.

Defensively, sophomore Kayla Yew (San Francisco, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral) led with 14 digs. Mueller and So-Holloway each had 12 and 10, respectively. The Tartans totaled 10 blocks with Aqui leading with three block assists.

Carnegie Mellon defeated Emory by the scores of 21-25, 25-23, 25-19, 21-25 and 15-13 in the nightcap. Three Tartans recorded double digits in kills senior Eliza Donohue (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) putting down 19 and hit .447. Mueller recorded 15 kills while junior Sarah Jurgens (Eagan, Minn.) had 14. So-Holloway and Thiele combined for 52 of the Tartans 57 assists with So-Holloway leading with 37.

Yew tabbed a career-best 39 digs to lead the defense. The sophomore has now recorded double digit digs in every match this season. So-Holloway had 12 digs while freshman Diana Balta (Media, Pa./Penncrest) had 11 and Mueller 10.
