From Case Western Reserve University Athletics
The Case Western Reserve University volleyball earned its second sweep of the season on Friday night at Horsburgh Gymnasium, as the Spartans topped Eastern Mennonite University with scores of 25-8, 25-17 and 25-23 to open play at the 19th-Annual Marcia French Tournament.
With the win, the Spartans improved to 3-2 on the season, while the Royals dropped to 2-4 on the campaign.
Statistically, freshman outside hitter Anna Jaskoviak and sophomore outside hitter Karley King each posted a team-high seven kills, while Jaksoviak also added eight digs. Sophomore setter Faith Ellis led the Spartans with 23 assists, while freshman setter Jiayi Shen contributed 10 to the team total.
Defensively, sophomore libero Christine Tamura led the Spartans with 15 digs. Sophomore middle hitter Haley Sims and freshman outside Katie Kaminski each added two total blocks to the defensive effort.
The key moment in the match came later on after Eastern Mennonite took a 9-1 lead to start the third set. Out of a timeout, the Spartans rattled off five straight points in a row as part of a 9-1 run to tie the set at 10-10. That momentum carried on as they went on a 7-3 run that finished with a kill by senior middle hitter Emma Briggs to give CWRU a 17-13 lead. The lead was enough as the Spartans finished the final set with a 25-23 victory.
The Royals were led by Maria Yoder with eight service aces and five kills.
