CWRU Rallies For 3-2 Win at Oberlin

Sophomore middle hitter Haley Sims and freshman middle blocker Katie Kaminski racked up 13 and nine kills, respectively, to lead the Case Western Reserve University volleyball team to a 3-2 win versus Oberlin College on Wednesday evening.

The Spartans are now 11-6 on the season and head into a weekend of competition as the host of the first University Athletic Association Round Robin in 2017.

Sophomore Faith Ellis and freshman Jiayi Shen split the setting duties, tallying 24 and 11 assists, respectively. Junior defensive specialist Karina Bondelid led the Spartans with 11 digs, while Ellis added 10 to the team total.

CWRU lost the first 25-23, but hit the ignition in the second and led by as many as nine after a service ace by Shen for a 19-10 lead. After some back and forth play, the Yeowomen were able to cut the deficit down by two. The Spartans would go on to win second 25-20.

In the third set, CWRU fell by a score of 25-20. The Spartans came back in the fourth to gain an 18-13 lead after a kill by sophomore outside hitter Karley King. The Spartans would end the fourth 25-22 after a successful attack by Kaminski.

CWRU closed out the back and forth match in the fifth set, after securing the 15-13 victory.

Oberlin was led by Maura Gibbs with 26 kills and 13 digs.
