Emory Volleyball To Embark On Nicaragua Tour

From Emory University Athletics

The Emory volleyball program will travel to the Central American nation of Nicaragua, August 6-13, playing three contests against the Nicaraguan National Team.

The Eagles are scheduled to play matches on Aug. 7, 11 and 12.  Among the cities head coach Jenny McDowell and her team will visit will be Managua, the capital city of Nicaragua, San Juan Del Sur, considered the nation's most desired beach location, and Granada, which is Central America's oldest colonial city.  In addition to the volleyball matches, the team will take part in several days of community service including stops at cooperative for people with disabilities and a preschool.

"This will be an exciting trip for our team on many levels," said McDowell.  Obviously, the chance to play against excellent competition is a positive from the volleyball perspective, but the opportunity to travel to a country in Central America and experience that culture as a team is something that our players will remember for a lifetime."

Emory closed out 2016 ranked No. 2 in the nation with an overall record of 33-6.  The Eagles made the schools' 21st straight appearance in the NCAA D-III Tournament where it advance to the quarterfinals of the Championships.

The team will gather in Atlanta on August 5 before departing Hartsfield-Jackson Airport the following afternoon.  The Eagles' travel party will return home on the afternoon of August 13.
