NYU Concludes 2017 Campaign With Comeback Win Over Brandeis

From NYU Athletics

The New York University women's volleyball team concluded its season with a come-from-behind, five-set victory over Brandeis University in the seventh-place match at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship on Saturday, November 4, at Emory University in Atlanta, GA.

The Violets defeated Brandeis for the second time this season, this time by a score of 13-25, 20-25, 25-20, 25-21, 15-9.

After dropping the first two sets, NYU (11-22) topped the Judges (15-14) in the third and fourth sets to set up a winner-take-all fifth frame.

The squads traded points early in the fifth set before a 3-0 Violets' run gave them a 5-2 advantage. The lead was short-lived, however, as Brandeis answered with three straight of their own to tie the set at five. A 7-2 NYU run put the Violets back in front, 12-7 and the team held on to win the set 15-9 on a kill from senior captain Rayne Ellis.

Caroline Rapp finished with a double-double (15 kills, 19 digs) to lead the Violets.

FYI:

- NYU hit .294 (seven kills, two errors, 17 total attacks) in the decisive fifth set.

- Ellis, playing in her final game as a Violet, finished with 13 kills and a .206 attack percentage. The Macon, GA, native also added five blocks.

- Daryl Mitchell dished out a season-best 38 assists in the win.

- This marked the fourth-straight year that NYU has defeated Brandeis in the seventh-place matchup.

The victory concludes the season for the Violets, who finished the season with seven wins in their final 10 matches.
