Rochester Defeats Frostburg & Hamilton on Day 1 of Invitational

Rochester won its first two matches in the UR Volleyball Invitational on Friday evening in differing fashion. The Yellowjackets defeated Frostburg State, 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-18), then rallied with a strong game four to defeat Hamilton, 3-1 (25-13, 18-25, 25-21, 25-13).
 
First day results left Rochester and Pitt-Bradford at the top of the standings at 2-0. The two teams will not meet on Saturday. Frostburg State survived a five-setter to defeat Houghton College and is 1-1 along with Houghton. Hamilton and Utica College are both 0-1. Wells College is 0-2. SUNY Poly makes its tourney debut on Saturday.
 
Against Frostburg, Alara Kocak had nine kills and Clara Martinez had eight. Kate Korslund and Megan McHugh contributed six kills apiece. Beth Ghyzel had 13 assists, 10 digs, and four kills. Renae Lapins had 21 assists. Courtney Vidovich and Lydia Barnard had nine digs each.
 
The Yellowjackets had seven aces – two each by Korslund, Vidovich, and Sara Apanavicius. As a team, Rochester hit .293, led by .583 from Martinez (8 kills, one error, 12 attacks).
 
Naya Cheatem was the kill leader for Frostburg (4-2). Gianna Carmona and Biamba Tshitenge had five kills each. Madelyn Torres and Kate Onyundo had 11 assists. Lindsey Scepura had 13 digs. Cori Smothers added eight.
 
The Hamilton match was different. Rochester pulled away from a 6-6 tie in the first set to post the victory. The Yellowjackets couldn't get in sync in set two, hitting .062 and Hamilton took command to even the match. Rochester pulled out a four-point win to take a 2-1 lead. UR put it away with a strong start in set four, scoring the first eight points, then building leads of 17-4 and 21-6.
 
Kocak had 11 kills. Martinez added nine (hitting .292 to Kocak's .250). Ghyzel added seven plus 12 assists and four digs. Allie ReRubertis had five kills. Korslund and Kayla Sell had four.
 
Rochester had two solo blocks in the match (Megan McHugh and Ghyzel) and 12 block assists. Martinez and McHugh led the way with three each. Korslund had two. Lapins had 22 assists and eight digs.

For Hamilton, Erin Donahue had 11 kills, Courtney Brown had 10, and Giuliana Rankin had eight. Emma Parkhurst led the setters with 28 assists.
 
Christine Zizzi had 22 digs, Parkhurst had 20, Nikki Matsuoka had 13, and Kendall Searcy had 10.
