Yellowjackets Win Own Invitational With Perfect 4-0 Mark

Rochester won team championship of its UR Volleyball Invitational on Saturday by posting a 3-0 victory over SUNY Poly and a 3-1 victory over Houghton College. The Yellowjackets were 4-0 on the two days.
 
Frostburg State, which Rochester defeated in the first match of the tournament, was second with a 3-1 record. Hamilton College was 2-1, Pitt-Bradford 2-2, SUNY Poly 1-1, Houghton 1-3, Wells 1-3, and Utica 0-3.
 
Alara Kocak and Courtney Vidovich of Rochester were named to the All-Tournament Team. They were joined on the team by Naya Cheatem and Madelyn Torres of Frostburg State, Christine Zizzi of Hamilton, Naomi Prentice of Houghton, Emily Cleveland of Pitt-Bradford, Sydney Johnson of SUNY Poly, Nicole Herringshaw of Utica, and Olyvia Brazier of Wells.
 
Kocak led the tournament players in kills. She had 54 in 14 sets, an average of 3.86 per set. She finished third in hitting percentage (.342). UR's Clara Martinez was second in hitting percentage (.356).  Vidovich was the digs leader (67 in 13 sets, 5.15 avg.).
 
In the 3-0 win over SUNY Poly (25-14, 25-19, 25-13), Rochester hit .290. Kocak had 14 kills and hit .440. Martinez had 12 kills and hit .360. Allie DeRubertis had six kills and Kayla Sell had five. The assist leaders were Beth Ghyzel with 20 and Renae Lapins with 19.
 
UR compiled nine service aces. Kate Korslund and Melissa Welsh had two apiece. Sara Apanavicius and Welsh led with seven digs. DeRubertis had six, Sell and Vidovich five.
 
SUNY Poly's leader in kills was Makayla Hulett with six. Sydney Johnson had 13 assists. Karlie King, Johnson, and Charlotte Rutnik had two aces apiece. Johnson had nine digs, Brittany Adams had eight.
 
In the final match of the tournament, Rochester defeated Houghton, 3-1 (25-22, 23-25, 25-15, 25-14).  The Yellowjackets hit .260 to .153 for the Highlanders. Rochester led all the way in the third set after battling through three lead changes and six ties in set two (which evened matters in team scoring).
 
Kocak had 20 kills.  Martinez had 11 and Megan McHugh had 10. DeRubertis added eight kills. Rochester had 14 aces, led by Lapins with five. Ghyzel had three as did Apanavicius. Vidovich had 27 digs. Lapins had 25 assists. Ghyzel had 24.
 
Prentice led Houghton with 11 kills, five digs, and four block assists. Ally Bittinger had nine kills, Erica Barney had eight. Anna Coryell had 33 assists. Morgan Potempa had 16 digs, Barney 14, and Coryell 10.
 
The four-match tournament sweep pushed Rochester's record to 7-1.
