Yellowjackets Finish Fourth Overall at New York Regional Challenge

Rochester split its two Saturday matches in the 2017 New York Regional Challenge Volleyball Tournament. The Yellowjackets lost to Clarkson University, 1-3 (12-25, 13-25, 25-22, 17-25) before bouncing back to defeat Buffalo State College, 3-0 (25-13, 25-20, 25-16).
 
Three teams tied for the NY Regional title with 3-0 records: Clarkson, Fredonia, and NYU. The winner of the tiebreaker to declare the champion was NYU. The Violets conceded the fewest points to the opposition over the two days of the event.
 
Rochester's 2-1 finish left UR in fourth place, a game ahead of Buffalo State, Nazareth, RIT, and SUNY Cortland. Rochester is 18-11 overall. The loss to Clarkson snapped a five-match winning streak.
 
Against Clarkson, UR hit the ball well in the third game (.324). For the four-game match, the Yellowjackets hit .130. Clarkson hit .274 over the same four games.
 
Alara Kocak had 12 kills, Allie DeRubertis had 11, and Clara Martinez had 10. Lydia Barnard had three aces. Bianca Dyer and Sara Apanavicius had one each.
 
Renae Lapins had 25 assists. Beth Ghyzel had 13, and Barnard had two. Barnard was the leader in digs with 18. Dyer had 13, and Kocak finished with nine. DeRubertis, Martinez, and Ghyzel each had two blocks.
 
Rochester re-asserted itself in the Buffalo State match. It was the second meeting of the year between the teams. Buffalo State defeated UR, 3-1, at its tournament in September.

This time, the Yellowjackets hit a sparkling .371 in the first game, battled in the second game, and then hit .303 in the third game.
 
Ghyzel had an all-around strong game with nine kills, 13 assists, four saces, four blocks, and eight digs. UR finished with four block solos and 12 assists. Martinez had one solo and five assists. Tamera Shaw had two solos and two assists.
 
Lapins had 22 assists and two digs. The digs leaders were Barnard with 16 and Bianca Dyer with 13.
 
Martinez had eight kills – second to Ghyzel's nine. Shaw also had nine kills. Kocak and Kate Korsluynd had six apiece.
 
Kocak was named to the All-Tournament Team in voting by the head coaches.
