From Carnegie Mellon University Athletics

The Carnegie Mellon University volleyball team began play at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship on Friday, November 2 at the University of Rochester. The Tartans defeated Case Western Reserve University, 3-0, in the opening round before falling to No. 11 Emory University, 3-0, in the semifinals. The Tartans are now 22-9 for the year.

Against Case Western Reserve, the Tartans won by set scores of 25-18, 25-17 and 25-13. Three Tartans recorded double-digit kills with senior Sarah Jurgens (Eagan, Minn. / Eagan) leading with 12. Junior Erika Foose (Allentown, Pa. / Parkland) put done 11 kills with no errors to hit .647 for the match while senior Lauren Mueller (Downingtown, Pa. / Downingtown STEM Academy) had 10 kills. Junior setter Maia So-Holloway (Oakland, Calif. / Sacred Heart Cathedral) dished out 38 assists and had 16 digs, as junior Kayla Yew (San Francisco, Calif. / Sacred Heart Cathedral) had 19 digs and seven assists. Mueller helped with 18 digs and sophomore Julia Kim (Centreville, Va. / Chantilly) picked up 11 digs.

The first set against Emory took extra points, as the Eagles won 27-25. After a 25-16 win in set two, the Eagles went on to a 25-16 win in set three.

Both teams put down 18 kills in the first set with Mueller collecting seven for the Tartans. Twice she tied the set late at 24-24 and 25-25.

The Tartans trailed 15-9 in the second set before  Yew served five straight points as the Tartans climbed back to tie the set 15-15. After an Emory timeout, the Eagles finished the set with a 10-1 run.

A back-and-forth third set ran in the Eagles' favor midway through when they used a 6-0 run to go up 15-7 and then didn't trail by less than seven the remainder of the set.

Mueller led the Tartans with 13 kills against Emory with Jurgens collecting 11 kills. So-Holloway had 34 assists while Yew had 21 digs.
