Julianne Malek’s Play Garners Sports Imports/AVCA National Player of the Week Honor

Senior middle hitter Julianne Malek of the No. 11-ranked Washington University in St. Louis volleyball team was named the Sports Imports/American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III National Player of the Week, as announced by the association on Tuesday.

Malek helped lead the Bears to a 4-0 week, including a thrilling five set victory over No. 2 Colorado College. During 13 sets played, Malek recorded 46 kills compared to just five errors on 67 attempts for a .612 hitting percentage. In addition, she posted 15 digs, 13 blocks and four aces.

In the win over Colorado College, Malek was at her best, totaling a week-high 16 kills on 22 attempts for a .727 hitting percentage. She did not record a single error in the five set match, which was a feat she accomplished on two other occasions during the week. In addition, The Woodlands, Texas-native had seven digs, five blocks and two aces against the Tigers.

Malek received the honor for the second time in her career. She is the 20th Bear to receive the honor and her award marks the 29th time in program history. Currently, Malek leads Division III in hitting percentage with a .452 mark.

WashU returns to University Athletic Association (UAA) play in Pittsburgh, Pa. from Saturday-Sunday, Oct. 13-14, starting with a match against Carnegie Mellon.
