The No. 8 University of Chicago volleyball team finished its second University Athletic Association Round Robin with a two-match sweep Sunday afternoon in Pittsburgh, defeating Rochester and host Carnegie Mellon to cap a 3-1 weekend.
The Maroons won their 24th game of the season to improve to 24-3 overall and 6-1 in league play after falling to ranked Emory and topping New York University.
UChicago and Emory now stand as the only two teams in the league with a 6-1 record.
UCHICAGO 3, ROCHESTER 0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-15)
The Maroons had little trouble with the Yellowjackets (19-8, 1-5), steamrolling to three-straight wins to open play Sunday.
UChicago hit .255 for the match compared to .009 for Rochester, who had 25 kills and 24 errors. Senior Audrey Scrafford (.500) and junior Madison Pearson (.444) each had 10 kills for the Maroons, both hitting over .400.
Sophomore Emma Griffith dished out 34 assists and had 12 digs and libero Katherine Wilson recorded a team-high 18 digs. Rookie Temilade Adekoya chipped in 12 digs defensively and Pearson was solid at the net, adding four block assists.
UCHICAGO 3, CARNEGIE MELLON 1 (26-24, 28-26, 15-25, 25-19)
The Maroons had to battle in their final match of the weekend, edging the Tartans (16-7, 5-2) in two opening marathon battles before closing out the contest in the fourth set.
Junior Madison Pearson led the offense with 17 kills (on a stellar .485 percentage) and four block assists, senior Audrey Scrafford (two block assists) had 13 kills and junior Anne Marie Stifter had a double-double with 11 kills and 17 digs.
Sophomore setter Emma Griffith spread the wealth with 52 assists, as senior Sarah Muisenga (eight kills) and first-year Audra Berg (eight kills, two block assists) also had solid numbers at the net.
Temilade Adekoya (15 digs), Muisenga (14 digs), and Griffith (eight digs, three block assists) also contributed defensively in the efforts, which featured two good attacking teams. UChicago swung for .261 and the Tartans .244 for the match.
The Maroons completed their greatest comeback in the second set, trailing 10-3. Scrafford totaled four kills in a stretch after a UChicago timeout that saw the visitors outscore CMU by a 10-1 margin to get back into the set.
