The New York University women's cross country team finished a best-ever sixth at the NCAA Division III National Championship, which was held in Hanover, IN, on Saturday, November 23.
After a previous best-ever 22nd-place performance in 2012, this year's team capped a five-year top-30 streak with a finish that produced two All-Americans in the same season for the first time in NYU history. The pair also represent the first two cross country All-Americans under current Head Coach Nick McDonough.
Sophomore Lily Corsaro and junior Emily Cousens each earned the honor by finishing 34th and 35th, respectively. Corsaro's time over the 6,000-meter course was 21:59.3, barely ahead of Cousen's 21:59.9.
"The both ran great," McDonough said. "They started in the back and moved up gradually throughout the race. Just a great effort."
As a team, the Violets totaled 278 points, just 17 behind fourth-place finisher University of Chicago and fifth-place finisher MIT. Both of those teams had 261 points
Johns Hopkins University, which entered the competition ranked #1 in the nation by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), won the race with 85 points.
NYU entered the Championship ranked #7.
HIGHLIGHTS:
- NYU's third scorer was junior Sarah Czuprynski. She took 69th overall with a time of 22:22.6
- Junior Hannah Borenstein was not far off Czuprynski's pace, finishing 77th in a time of 22:27.6.
- The Violets' final scorer was freshman Kassiani Chrysanthopoulos (170th place, 23:06.8).
"Definitely an historic day for the program," McDonough concluded.
