Freshman Danielle Kulpins (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield Central) won an individual title in her collegiate debut, and the Case Western Reserve University women's cross country team defeated John Carroll University in the 14th Annual Bill Sudeck Classic on Saturday at Squire Valleevue Farm.
The Spartans captured the top six spots to win the team score, 15 to 49.
Kulpins raced to a time of 15:42.22 on the 4k course, finishing nearly seven seconds ahead of the rest of the field. She is the second Spartan freshman in three seasons to win the Sudeck Classic. Current junior Kelsey Aamoth (Solon, Ohio/Solon), who is still working her way back from injury, won the event each of the last two years.
Sophomore Olivia Zabrodsky (Jamestown, N.Y./Jamestown), who missed all of last season due to injury, placed runner-up in her first collegiate race with a time of 15:49.21.
Rounding out the Spartan scoring was senior captain Kristen Ruckstuhl (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor), junior Evy Hail (Anchorage, Alaska/Eagle River) and freshman Hayley Yocum (West Lafayette, Ind./West Lafayette). Ruckstuhl finished in 15:55.72, while Hail and Yocum posted respective marks of 16:02.74 and 16:10.60.
The Sudeck Classic is named in honor of legendary former coach and CWRU Hall of Famer, Bill Sudeck, who passed away in August of 2000.
