The Emory men’s and women’s cross country
teams concluded their 2014 seasons on Saturday at the NCAA Division
III Championships in Mason, Ohio.
Both sides recorded 29th-place
finishes out of 32 teams. The Emory women totaled 653 points
and were led by senior Tamara Surtees who paced the Emory
contingent for the seventh straight meet, recording a 6K time of
22:26 that placed 34th out of 275 runners. Surtees’
finish enabled her to capture All-America honors, the first Emory
female to accomplish that feat since 2006 (Melissa Jones.) and the
sixth overall. Senior Marissa Gogniat was the next Eagle to cross
the finish line. Checking in with a 23:51 that ranked
149th in the field. Rounding out
the Emory scorers were senior Elise Viox (24:01), freshman Halle
Markel (24:19) and freshman Gabrielle Rudolph (24:22). Other
competitors for Emory included senior Stephanie Crane (24:28) and
sophomore Sophie Cemaj (24:55). Johns Hopkins took home the team
title with 87 points while MIT was second with 112
points.
Emory registered 650 points with senior Alex Fleischhacker
finishing as the men’s team No. 1 performer, clocking a
personal-best 8k time of 25:31.5 that slotted him
128th out of 280 entries.
Classmate Tyler Cooke, also running in his final cross country
meet, came through with a career-best effort of 25:32 that ranked
131st. Junior Lukas Mees (25:43) was
the third Eagle finisher while sophomore Grant Murphy (25:56.9) and
freshman Jordan Flowers (26:10) closed out the team’s
scorers. Other Emory runners included sophomores Austin Hunt
(26:23) and Michael Sisario (26:48). North Central captured
the team trophy with 130 points and was followed closely by St.
Olaf’s 143 points. UW-LaCrosse was third (188
pts.).
