Case Western Reserve University junior Danielle Kulpins broke a course record to help lead the Spartans women's cross country team to a victory at the season-opening Sudeck Sunset Classic Stampede at the Squire Valleevue Farm in Hunting Valley, Ohio on Friday afternoon.

The Spartans placed five runners in the top-eight to total 24 points, and finish ahead of second-place John Carroll University, which tallied 31 points.  Ursuline College rounded out the team standings, placing third with 85 points.

Kulpins' 4K time of 15:02 broke the previous course record of 15:14.9, set by former Spartan Kelsey Aamoth at last year's meet.  Kulpins was followed by sophomore Jennifer Hoffmann in third-place with a time of 15:35, while freshman Vanessa Pasadyn placed fifth in her first collegiate race with a time of 15:41.

Rounding out the scorers for CWRU on Friday were junior Rachel Laveson in seventh place with a time of 15:59 and sophomore Isa Torres-Padin in eighth with a mark of 16:02.  Other top finishers for the Spartans included sophomore Amy Lin in 12th-place (16:25) and sophomore Sophie Trikeriotis in 14th-place (16:35).

The Sudeck Sunset Classic Stampede is run in the honor of Bill Sudeck, who served as the head cross country and track and field coach at the Case Institute of Technology and Case Western Reserve University for 46 years, and coached his cross country teams to 12 conference titles.
