The New York University women's cross country team opened the 2017 season at the Vassar College Season Starter in Poughkeepsie, NY, on Friday, September 1.

The Violets launched their season by taking the runner-up position with 41 points in the 3K. They trailed only host Vassar, which finished with 39 points.

In her first taste of a cross country meet for NYU, junior Sabrina Herrmann secured second by recording a time of 11:06.9. She narrowly missed capturing first place by about three seconds.

"Sabrina has been a great force," said Head Coach Erison Hurtault. "She is someone I think can compete at the highest levels. She is really helping lead the crew."

Captain Hannah Haley and Megan Davis followed behind in fourth and seventh, respectively. The seniors posted times of 11:17.8 and 11:33.1 in their first action this fall.

HIGHLIGHTS:

- Fellow senior Emily Dethlefs took 10th by registering a time of 11:38.0.

- Trailing behind in 18th and 26th, respectively, were sophomore Isabella Steains and graduate student Lara Dorsky with times of 11:51.9 and 12:21.8.

- Junior Karen Yao and freshman Noela Franco finished at each others heels in 29th (12:35.6) and 30th (12:42.4), respectively.

"This is a crew that has some decent potential which they are already showing," said Hurtault. "Those girls are pushing hard."
