Khia Kurtenbach Earns Individual Title to Lead Maroons at UAA Championship

From University of Chicago Athletics

University of Chicago's Khia Kurtenbach finished her last University Athletic Association Cross Country Championship race on top, as the Maroons' senior captured medalist honors to lead the women's team to a second-place team finish Saturday.

Kurtenbach, who finished a close second in her last two UAA title races, didn't leave this one to chance, as the 2017 All-American finished a full 10 seconds ahead of second-place Gabrielle Stravach of Emory. She completed the mostly wooded, rocky 6-kilometer course in a time of 23 minutes, 4 seconds, to captured all-conference honors with classmate Cassidy McPherson (14th, 24:19).

Another pair of first-years – this time Abigail Shoemaker and Maggie Boudreau – both ran strong races to place 18th (24:40) and 19th (24:42), respectively, in the 76-runner race. Rounding out the scoring for the Maroons were sophomore Claire Brockway (23rd, 24:53), senior Kelsey Dunn (34th,25:25), and first-year Emma Dyer (39th, 25:30).

Washington-St. Louis swept both team races, as the women's side scored 37 points compared to 74 for the Maroons.

Kurtenbach's championship was the first individual medalist for the Maroon women since Liz Lawton won the UAA title in 2010.
