The University Athletic Association has announced its 30th Anniversary Women's Cross Country Team. Forty-eight student-athletes earned the honor, including an Association-best 14 runners from Washington University.
The team consists of each student-athlete who earned Individual Champion honors or accumulated five or more points in her career, with two points awarded for All-Association first-team recognition, and one point for second team honors.
Among those honored is the only three-time Individual Champion, Lucy Cheadle of Washington, who won the individual title from 2012-14. Other repeat individual honorees were Josefa Benzoni (1987-88) of University of Rochester, Jean Olds (1990-91) of Brandeis University, Theresa Patten (1992-93) of Brandeis, Emily Richard (1996-97) of Washington, Rhaina Echols (1998-99) of University of Chicago, and Maggie Grabow (2003-04), Beth Herndon (2005-06), and Taryn Surtees (2008-09) of Washington.
Cheadle, Echols, Herndon, Maureen McGranaghan (Carnegie Mellon University), and Richard each earned first team All-Association recognition for four consecutive years. Amy DiBianca (Emory University) and Sarah Wiehe (Chicago) finished their careers with three first-team and one second-team honors. Current Washington senior Alison Lindsay has earned first-team honors in each of her first three seasons.
In addition to the five runners who won back-to-back UAA individual titles and Lindsay, Washington boasts nine other student-athletes on the 30th Anniversary Team, including 2012 NCAA Woman of the Year Elizabeth Phillips, 2011 UAA medalist Erica Jackey, and 2016 Runner of the Year Aly Wayne. Jerylin Jordan and Tyler Mulkin were named to the first team three times, while Susan Chou and Julie Hoover garnered two first-team accolades and one second-team honor. Karen Sorensen won the individual title at the 1989 UAA Cross Country Championships.
In 30 years, 22 teams from the UAA have finished in the top-10 at the NCAA Division III Women's Cross Country Championship with Washington becoming the first UAA team to capture the national title in 2011. The Bears finished third or fourth in five different years between 2002-07 and were the national runners-up in 2010 and 2016. Chicago has posted three top-10 finishes, including a program-best fourth-place finish in 2013. Case Western Reserve University recorded back-to-back top-10 finishes in 2006 and 2007 with a sixth-place finish in 2007. Carnegie Mellon finished fourth in 1998, Rochester placed sixth in 1987, and Brandeis finished sixth in 1991.
