Athletes of the Week for January 13, 2020

Women’s Basketball

Allison Chernow  —  Emory University  —  Dresher, PA (Upper Dublin)

Senior Allison Chernow poured in a season-high 20 points to lead Emory University to an 86-65 victory over University of Rochester in the UAA opener for both schools. She connected on eight of 10 field goals and made all three of her free throw attempts. Chernow added six rebounds.

Miranda Burt  — University of Chicago  —  Knoxville, TN (Farragut)

Senior guard Miranda Burt scored 22 points as University of Chicago opened UAA play with a 78-64 road win over Washington University. She hit eight of 11 field goals, including 3-of-4 from three-point range, and hit all three of her free throws.

Men’s Basketball

Cole Frilling  — Case Western Reserve University  —  Coldwater, OH (Coldwater)

Freshman forward Cole Filling matched his season-high with 27 points to lead Case Western Reserve University to an 88-81 victory over visiting Carnegie Mellon University in the UAA opener for both schools. He shot 56.3 percent from the field (9-of-16), including four of six from 3-point range, and hit all five of his free throws. Frilling added seven rebounds and four blocks.

Women’s Fencing

Jessica Morales  —  Brandeis University  —  Wilmington, MA (Wilmington)

Brandeis University first-year fencer Jessica Morales advanced to the second day (top 64) at the 2019-20 International Fencing Federation (FIE) Grand Prix Series at the Sabre Grand Prix in Montreal, Canada. She won two bouts to qualify for the preliminary direct elimination tables as the 68th seed. Morales proceeded to post a 15-11 win over the 61st seed and upset the fourth seed, 15-14. She fell, 15-9, to the second-ranked fencer in the world from France, who has earned Olympic and world championship medals.

Women’s Swimming and Diving

Sandra Meszaros  —  Washington University  —  Pompano Beach, FL (Pine Crest)

Washington University first-year swimmer Sandra Meszaros swam to a pair of individual titles and on three winning relays in two meets. She won the 50-yard butterfly (26.44 seconds) and the 100-yard butterfly (57.89), while also swimming on the 400-yard medley relay (3:58.77) in the Bears’ 172-126 win over NCAA Division II’s 21st-ranked McKendree University. Meszaros swam on the 200-yard medley relay (1:49.09) and the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:36.59) that finished first at a home invitational on Friday.

Carmen White  —  NYU  —  Lake Bluff, IL (Lake Forest)

NYU senior Carmen White captured both diving events in the Violets’ 207-93 win over Wagner College on Saturday. She posted a score of 285.90 on the one-meter board and 274.0 points in the three-meter event.

Men’s Swimming and Diving

Giorgio DelGrosso  —  NYU  —  Keego Harbor, MI (Cranbrook Kingswood)

NYU senior Giorgio DelGrosso captured three individual events and swam on a winning relay in the Violets’ 207-93 victory over United States Merchant Marine Academy. He finished first in the 100- (55.84 seconds) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:04.2) events, while also taking the 200-yard individual medley in 1:57.12. DelGrosso swam on the Violets’ 400-yard medley relay that won in 3:22.11.

Hunter Whitbeck  —  NYU  —  Acton, MA (Acton-Boxborough Regional)

NYU freshman Hunter Whitbeck won one diving event and placed second in another in the Violets’ 207-93 victory over United States Merchant Marine Academy. He won the three-meter event with a score of 332.00 and placed second on the one-meter board with 283.65 points.

Women’s Indoor Track and Field

Sophie Elgamal  —  University of Chicago  —  Raleigh, NC (Looms Chaffee, CT)

Junior Sophie Elgamal of University of Chicago won the one mile event in her first meet of the season at the Maroons’ Phoenix Invitational. Her time of 5:11.57 ranks sixth in NCAA Division III this season.

Isabel Garon  —  University of Chicago  —  Sonoma, CA (Sonoma Valley)

Senior Isabel Garon of University of Chicago, competing in her first meet of the season. won the pole vault at the Maroons’ Phoenix Invitational. Her mark of 3.55 meters ranks seventh in NCAA Division III this season.

Men’s Indoor Track and Field

Ryan Cutter  —  University of Chicago  —  El Sobrante, CA (Hercules)

Junior Ryan Cutter of University of Chicago opened his season by winning the one mile run at the Maroons’ Phoenix Invitational. His time of 4:22.19 ranks sixth in NCAA Division III this season.

Alexander Scott  — University of Chicago  —  Plover, WI (Stevens Point Area)

Senior Alexander Scott of University of Chicago opened his season by posting the top shot put distance in NCAA Division III this season. He broke the program record by nearly one meter with a throw of 17.53 meters at the Maroons’ Phoenix Invitational. Scott also won the weight throw with a heave of 16.05 meters.

Wrestling

Sean Lyons  — NYU  —  Sewell, NJ (St. Joseph’s Prep, PA)

NYU senior Sean Lyons won all five of his bouts at 157 pounds at the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Dual Meet Championships in Lexington, Kentucky. He defeated his second-ranked opponent from fifth-ranked University of Mount Union, and his fifth-ranked opponent from fourth-ranked Loras College. Lyons added wins over two more ranked opponentss, eighth-ranked Johnson & Wales University and 10th-ranked North Central College. NYU finished a program-best eighth at the prestigious event, including wins over Mount Union and North Central.
 

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
