Athletes of the Week for January 17, 2023

Women’s Basketball

Grace Hynes  —  University of Chicago —  Chicago, IL (Mother McAuley)

Senior guard Grace Hynes recorded a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds as University of Chicago handed top-ranked NYU its first loss of the season on Friday, 71-57. She followed that with 25 points and six boards in the Maroons’ 80-56 victory over Brandeis University on Sunday. In the two games, Hynes shot 47.2 percent from the field (17-for-36), 37.5 percent from three-point range (3-of-7), and 76.9 percent from the free throw line (10-for-13).

Jessica Brooks  —  Washington University  —  St. Louis, MO (Mary Institute & St. Louis Country Day)

Junior guard Jessica Brooks scored 23 points and pulled down nine rebounds as Washington University overcame a double-digit deficit in the final nine minutes to post a 57-56 win over top-ranked NYU on Sunday. She opened the weekend by recording a double-double of 24 points and 11 boards in the Bears’ 89-59 win over Brandeis University on Friday. In the two games, Brooks shot 51.5 percent from the field (17-for-33) and 84.6 percent from the free throw line (11-of-13).

Men’s Basketball

Matt Wiele —  University of Rochester  —  West Harrison, NY (Hackley)

Junior guard Matt Wiele averaged 19.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 3.0 steals per game as University of Rochester posted home wins over seventh-ranked and previously undefeated Case Western Reserve University and Carnegie Mellon University. In the two games, he shot 73.7 percent from the field (14-for-19) and 88.9 percent from the free throw line (8-of-9). Wiele netted a career-high 26 points in an 85-69 win over the Spartans on Friday.

Women’s Swimming and Diving

Savannah Xu  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Chapel Hill, NC (Chapel Hill)

Carnegie Mellon University first-year swimmer Savannah Xu captured three individual events for the second time this season in a double-dual meet against Denison University and Calvin University on Saturday. She won the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events in 57.14 seconds and 2:03.91, respectively. Xu also finished first in the 400-yard individual medley in 4:30.03.

Veronica Fong  —  University of Chicago  —  West Vancouver, Canada (West Vancouver Secondary)

University of Chicago first-year diver Veronica Fong twice swept the one- and three-meter events against NCAA Division I and II competition. On Friday against Lewis University, she scored 297.23 points on the three-meter board and smashed the pool record set by a former Division I champion and the program record set by last year’s NCAA Division III champion Elizabeth Cron with a mark of 332.70. Fong took the one- (276.45) and three-meter (290.85) board events on Saturday against University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Men’s Swimming and Diving

Garrett Clasen  —  University of Chicago  —  Aurora, IL (Batavia)

University of Chicago junior Garrett Clasen won five individual events and swam on two winning relays against NCAA Division I and II competition. He broke the pool and program records against University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee with a time of 50.47 seconds in the 100-yard individual medley, which ranks second in NCAA Division III this season. Clasen also recorded first-place finishes in the 100-yard breaststroke (57.12 seconds), 200-yard IM (1:52.82), 100-yard freestyle (46.14), and 200-yard freestyle (1:41.76).

Matthew Wagner  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Mason, OH (William Mason)

Carnegie Mellon University senior Matthew Wagner recorded four season-highs in two diving events during the week. He won the one-meter board at Denison University on Saturday with a six-dive score of 307.35 points and placed fourth in the three-meter event with a score of 310.55. On Thursday and Friday at NYU, Wagner placed third on the 11-dive score of 481.60 and fifth on the one-meter board with a mark of 441.00.

Women’s Indoor Track and Field

Emily Konkus  —  Washington University  —  Sparks, MD (Hereford)

Washington University senior Emily Konkus won the mile run at the Indianapolis Season Opener at University of Indianapolis. Her time of 4:57.18 ranks second in NCAA Division III this season.

Ebun Opata  —  Washington University  —  London, England (St. Andrew’s Episcopal School)

Washington University junior Ebun Opata finished first in the triple jump and long jump at the Indianapolis Season Opener at University of Indianapolis. Her mark of 11.97 meters in the triple jump ranks second in NCAA Division III this season, while her leap of 5.61 meters in the long jump ranks third.

Men’s Indoor Track and Field

Jackson Price  —  Emory University  —  Denver, CO (Regis Jesuit)

Emory University sophomore Jackson Price broke the 13-year-old program record in the 200-meter dash at the Eagles’ CrossPlex Showdown. His time of 21.99 seconds bettered the previous mark by .02 seconds and ranks 10th in NCAA Division III this season.

Henry Brandstadter  —  Emory University  —  Philadelphia, PA (Springside Chestnut Hill Academy)

Emory University freshman Henry Brandstadter won the high jump at the Emory CrossPlex Showdown. His jump of 2.00 meters is tied for eighth-best in NCAA Division III this season.

Wrestling

E.J. Alizio  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  East Norwich, NY (Chaminade)

Freshman E.J. Alizio of Case Western Reserve University won each of his matches in the 125-pound bracket at the Claude Sharer Duals. He earned decisions over opponents from Muskingum University and Washington & Jefferson University, while earning a technical fall over his Otterbein University foe.

They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
