Athletes of the Week for January 20, 2020

Women’s Basketball

Abbey Lawrence  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  West Caldwell, NJ (Newark Tech)

Case Western Reserve University sophomore guard/forward Abbey Lawrence averaged 19.0 points and 3.0 rebounds per game as the Spartans defeated Washington University and 14th-ranked University of Chicago. She opened the weekend with 21 points in a 74-73 victory over the Bears, just the second win over Washington University in program history. Lawrence totaled 17 points and four boards in a 77-71 upset victory over the Maroons. For the weekend, she shot 42.4 percent from the field (14-for-33), 37.5 percent from three-point range (3-of-8), and 100.0 percent from the free throw line (7-for-7).

Men’s Basketball

Nolan Hagerty  — Brandeis University  —  Yarmouth, ME (Yarmouth)

Brandeis University sophomore forward Nolan Hagerty averaged 19.5 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game as the Judges recorded wins over University of Rochester and third-ranked Emory University. He shot 65.4 percent from the floor (17-for-26), hitting eight of 11 field goals in a 76-54 win over the Yellowjackets on Friday. Hagerty netted a career-high 21 points on 9-of-15 shooting and grabbed 14 rebounds in the Judges’ 75-73 victory over the Eagles.

Women’s Fencing

Jessica Morales  —  Brandeis University  —  Wilmington, MA (Wilmington)

First-year fencer Jessica Morales of Brandeis University finished 14-1 at the Philadelphia Invitational against some of the Judges’ toughest competition of the season. She posted 3-0 marks against opponents from third-ranked Columbia University, ninth-ranked Northwestern University, 10th-ranked University of Pennsylvania, and Wayne State University. The Judges finished 2-3 as a team, including a near upset of Northwestern University.

Men’s Fencing

Darren Yen  —  NYU  —  Chatham, NJ (Chatham)

Freshman Darren Yen of NYU produced a 19-7 record at the Penn Invitational in Philadelphia over the weekend. He posted 3-0 marks against New Jersey Institute of Technology and Haverford College as the Violets finished 6-5 in team competition.

Women’s Swimming and Diving

Chanell Kann  — University of Chicago  —  Cupertino, CA (Cupertino)

First-year swimmer Chanell Kann broke the University of Chicago record in the 100-yard individual medley in 59.42 seconds against University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Her time ranks fourth in NCAA Division III this season. Kann added victories in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:07.02) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:24.15). The previous day, she earned wins in the 100-yard breaststroke and 200-yard individual medley in a tri-meet with Lewis University and Olivet Nazarene University.

Men’s Swimming and Diving

Giorgio DelGrosso  —  NYU  —  Keego Harbor, MI (Cranbrook Kingswood)

Senior Giorgio DelGrosso of NYU won two individual events and swam on two victorious relays in the Violets’ win over NCAA Division II West Chester University. He captured the 100- (56.22 seconds) and 200-yard (2:04.54) breaststroke events. DelGrosso swam on the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:09.36) and the 200-yard medley relay (1:33.26)

Reona Yamaguchi  —  University of Chicago  —  Tokyo, Japan (The Peddie School)

Senior Reona Yamaguchi broke his own pool and University of Chicago record in the 100-yard individual medley against NCAA Division I University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. His time of 52.67 seconds ranks fifth in NCAA Division III this season. Yamaguchi also captured the 100-yard breaststroke (58.28 seconds) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:09.48). The previous day in a tri-meet with Lewis University and Olivet Nazarene University, he captured the 200-yard IM (1:53.58) and swam on the winning 200-yard medley relay (1:33.15).

Lucas Bumgarner  —  Emory University  —  Pittsburgh, PA (Mt. Lebanon)

Sophomore Lucas Bumgarner swept the diving events in an Emory University dual meet win over NCAA Division II Delta State University. He posted scores of 354.94 on the three-meter board and 309.55 in the one-meter dive.

Andrew Chen  —  University of Chicago  —  Oakland Gardens, NY (Bronx HS of Science)

Freshman Andrew Chen broke the University of Chicago record on the one-meter board versus NCAA Division I University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee with a score of 330.15 points. The previous day, he swept the diving events, recording a score of 332.63 in the three-meter event.

Women’s Indoor Track and Field

Sophie Grigaux —  Washington University  —  Ladera Ranch, CA (San Juan Hills)

Washington University junior Sophie Grigaux ran the fastest 800-meter time in NCAA Division III this season at the Friday Night Spikes Opener at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. She won the event with a time of 2:18.38.

Eka Jose  —  Washington University  —  Kansas City, MO (Liberty North)

Washington University junior Eka Jose captured three individual titles at the Friday Night Spikes Opener at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. Jose won the 60-meter dash (8.07 seconds), long jump (5.45 meters), and triple jump (11.74 meters). Her distance in the triple jump ranks second in NCAA Division III this season and her mark in the long jump ranks 10th.

Men’s Indoor Track and Field

Nick Matteucci  —  Washington University  —  De Peres, MO (Parkway South)

Washington University senior Nick Matteucci won the 3.000-meter run at the Friday Night Spikes Opener at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. His time of 8:21.76 ranks second in NCAA Division III this season.

Aaron Corin  — Brandeis University  —  Sudbury, MA (Lincoln-Sudbury)

Brandeis University senior Aaron Corin placed third in the pole vault at the Bowdoin College Invitational. His mark of 4.25 meters put him in the NCAA Division III rankings. 

Wrestling

Steve Bonsall  — University of Chicago  —  Westfield, NJ (Newark Academy)

Senior Steve Bonsall of University of Chicago was named Most Outstanding Wrestler of the Elmhurst College Al Hanke Invitational. He finished 4-0 with a pair of pins to claim the 157-pound title. Bonsall earned falls over opponents from Adrian College and Harper College, while earning decisions over opponents from University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and Harper.

 

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
