Athletes of the Week for January 24, 2023

Women’s Basketball

Natalie Bruns  —  NYU  —  St. Louis, MO (Kirkwood)

NYU junior forward Natalie Bruns averaged 15.0 points, 8.5 rebounds, 5.5 assists, 4.0 blocks, and 3.5 steals per game. She tied her season-high with 19 points, adding eight rebounds, five assists, and a career-high six steals in the Violets’ 80-67 victory over seventh-ranked University of Rochester on Sunday. Bruns totaled 11 points, nine boards, and six assists in a 76-63 NYU win over Emory University on Friday.

Men’s Basketball

Toby Harris —  Brandeis University  —  Durham, NC (Durham Academy)

Brandeis University sophomore forward Toby Harris averaged 22.5 points and 7.0 rebounds per game, while shooting 50 percent from the field and three-point range as the Judges split two contests with nationally ranked opponents. He finished with 19 points and six boards in an 83-72 win over seventh-ranked University of Rochester on Friday. Harris hit six 3-pointers and tallied 26 points in a 73-71 overtime loss to 18th-ranked Emory University on Sunday.

Women’s Swimming and Diving

Nicole Ranile  —  NYU  —  Hatfield, PA (Germantown Academy)

First-year swimmer Nicole Ranile of NYU won one event at Williams College and finished in the top-three in three events against NCAA Division II West Chester University. She took the 200-yard butterfly in 2:06.09 against Williams and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Ranile won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:06.44, while placing third in the 200-yard freestyle (1:55.79) and 100-yard butterfly (58.26 seconds) at West Chester.

Emilia Schwallie  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Weston, MA (Weston)

Senior Emilia Schwallie set a pair of career-best marks and surpassed the NCAA regional qualifying standard in both diving events in a Carnegie Mellon University home invitational against Indiana University of Pennsylvania and Chatham College. She recorded 500.00 points to capture the three-meter event and 495.40 points to place second on the one-meter board.

Men’s Swimming and Diving

Crow Thorsen  —  Emory University  —  Athens, GA (Asheville School)

Sophomore Crow Thorsen of Emory University provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships in two events in the Eagles’ dual meet win over Division II Delta State University. He won the 400-yard individual medley in 3:54.45, the fastest time in Division III this season. Thorsen also finished first in the 200-yard butterfly in 1:49.30.

Jud Kyle  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Austin, TX (St. Stephen’s Episcopal School)

Graduate student Jud Kyle set two pool and Carnegie Mellon University records in the diving events as the Tartans hosted Indiana University of Pennsylvania and Chatham College. He posted career-bests with scores of 595.40 on the one-meter board and 654.00 in the three-meter event.

Women’s Indoor Track and Field

Annika Urban  —  Emory University  —  Pittsburgh, PA (Fox Chapel)

Emory University senior Annika Urban ran a personal-best time in the one-mile run at the Carolina Challenge in Columbia, South Carolina over the weekend. Her time of 4:56.66 ranks as the third-fastest time in program history and third in NCAA Division III this season.

Liz Barre  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Ithaca, NY (Taft)

Carnegie Mellon University senior Liz Barre broke her own program record in the high jump at the SPIRE Midwest Track & Field Open on Saturday. She cleared the bar at 1.71 meters, bettering her previous mark of 1.67 meters and posting the second-best mark in NCAA Division III this season. Barre placed second in the 60-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 9.06 seconds.

Ebun Opata  —  Washington University  —  London, England (St. Andrew’s Episcopal School)

Washington University junior Ebun Opata finished first in the triple jump and long jump at the I-55 Triangular. Her leap of 12.10 meters in the triple jump ranks second this season in NCAA Division III. Opata won the long jump with a mark of 5.59 meters.

Men’s Indoor Track and Field

Colin McLaughlin  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Stamford, CT (Westhill)

Carnegie Mellon University sophomore Colin McLaughlin broke a seven-year-old program record in the 3,000-meter run at the SPIRE Midwest Track & Field Open on Saturday. His time of 8:22.52 bested the previous mark by .37 seconds and currently ranks eighth in NCAA Division III this season.

Spencer Moore  —  Emory University  —  Rochester, MN (Mayo)

Emory University senior Spencer Moore recorded the best time in program history in the mile run at the Carolina Challenge in Columbia, South Carolina over the weekend. His time of 4:09.86 ranks seventh in NCAA Division III this season.

Henry Brandstadter  —  Emory University  —  Philadelphia, PA (Springside Chestnut Hill Academy)

Emory University freshman Henry Brandstadter set a program record in the long jump at the Carolina Challenge on Saturday. His distance of 7.21 meters ranks fourth in NCAA Division III this season. Brandstadter placed eighth in the high jump with a mark of 1.85 meters.

Wrestling

Evan Anderson  —  NYU  —  Aurora, OH (Western Reserve Academy)

NYU freshman Evan Anderson reached the finals of the heavyweight bracket at the New York State Intercollegiate Open. He won two bouts by decision to reach the final before falling to an opponent from NCAA Division I Army.

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
