Athletes of the Week for January 27, 2020

Women’s Basketball

Mia Farrell  —  University of Chicago  —  Bolingbrook, IL (Joliet Catholic)

University of Chicago senior guard averaged 21.0 points and 7.0 rebounds as the Maroons registered home UAA wins over NYU and Brandeis University. She tallied a career-high 31 points and grabbed six boards in the Maroons’ 82-71 victory over the Violets on Friday and then contributed 11 points, eight rebounds, and three assists in a 68-60 overtime win over the Judges on Sunday. For the weekend, she shot 44.1 percent from the field (15-for-34) and 84.6 percent from the free throw line (11-of-13).

Men’s Basketball

Ryan Algier  —  University of Rochester  —  Fairport, NY (Fairport)

University of Rochester junior forward Ryan Algier averaged 19.5 points and 14.0 rebounds, while shooting 51.9 percent from the floor (14-for-27) in two home UAA wins. He scored 23 points and grabbed 11 boards in the Yellowjackets’ 88-86 overtime victory over Case Western Reserve University. Algier netted 16 points and pulled down a career-high 17 rebounds in a 78-62 win over Carnegie Mellon University.

Women’s Fencing

Samantha Shortall  —  Brandeis University  —  Norwell, MA (Norwell)

First-year fencer Samantha Shortall posted a 13-1 overall record in the foil to lead Brandeis University to a 4-2 record at the second Northeast Fencing Conference meet. She finished 3-0 against Boston College, Tufts University, and Drew University, while going 2-0 against Vassar College and 2-1 versus Brown University. The Judges earned wins over Tufts, Vassar, and Dartmouth to place third in the NFC.

Men’s Fencing

Lucas Lin  — Brandeis University  —  Plano, TX (Plano West)

Sophomore Lucas Lin posted a team-best 9-3 record in the sabre to lead Brandeis University to a 4-2 record at the second Northeast Fencing Conference meet. He finished 3-0 against Brown University and Vassar College, and 2-1 against Drew University. The Judges earned wins over Tufts University, Vassar, Drew and Dartmouth College to place fourth in the NFC.

Women’s Swimming and Diving

Honore Collins  —  NYU  —  Evanston, IL (Evanston)

NYU senior Honore Collins won the 200-yard freestyle in the Violets’ tri-meet with eight-ranked Massachusetts Institute of Technology and 10th-ranked host Williams College. She posted a winning time of 1:52.83.

Sophie Lever  —  University of Rochester  —  Oak Park, IL (Oak Park and River Forest)

University of Rochester first-year diver Sophie Lever broke the program record in the one-meter dive, while meeting the NCAA regional qualifying mark in both dives in a dual meet against State University of New York at Geneseo. Her score of 454.04 points in the one-meter event broke the 11-dive program record set by Danielle Neu in 2015. Lever posted a score of 426.30 on the three-meter board.

Men’s Swimming and Diving

Peyton Wilson  —  Washington University  —  Johnson City, TN (Science Hill)

Washington University senior Peyton Wilson claimed a pair of individual event titles and swam on a winning relay against NCAA Division II’s 17th-ranked Lindenwood University. He won the 50-yard freestyle (20.99 seconds) and the 200-yard backstroke (1:51.99), and was part of the victorious 400-yard medley relay team that won in 3:24.71.

Stephen Savchik  —  University of Rochester  —  Pittsburgh, PA (North Allegheny)

University of Rochester senior Stephen Savchik broke one of the longest standing program records and eclipsed the NCAA regional qualifying mark in both dives in a dual meet against State University of New York at Geneseo. He scored 533.17 on the three-meter board, breaking the previous record of 525.25 set in 1986 by Scott Richardson. Savchik accumulated 491.26 points in the one-meter event.

Women’s Indoor Track and Field

Kaitlyn Van Baalen  —  University of Chicago  —  Basking Ridge, NJ (Ridge)

Sophomore Kaitlyn Van Baalen of University of Chicago ran the fourth fastest time in NCAA Division III this season in winning the 800-meter run at the I-55 Triangular. She recorded a time of 2:17.16 to help lead the Maroons past Washington University and Illinois Wesleyan University.

Isabel Maletich  —  University of Chicago  —  Woodridge, IL (Downers Grove North)

Sophomore Isabel Maletich earned a pair of wins to help lead University of Chicago past Washington University and Illinois Wesleyan University at the I-55 Triangular. She won the long jump with a mark of 5.73 meters, which tied her for the top distance in NCAA Division III this season. Maletich also won the triple jump with a leap of 11.12 meters.

Caira Watson-Haynes  —  Washington University  —  Chicago, IL (St. Ignatius College Prep)

Junior Caira Watson-Haynes of Washington University won a pair of events on Saturday at the I-55 Triangular in Bloomington, Illinois. She took first place in the 60-meter hurdles (8.80) and the 60-meter dash (7.88 seconds). Her time in the hurdles ranks first in NCAA Division III this season.

Men’s Indoor Track and Field

Gio Alfred  —  Washington University  —  Mableton, GA (Campbell)

Freshman Gio Alfred of Washington University won the 60-meter hurdles at the I-55 Triangular on Saturday in Bloomington, Illinois. His time of 8.19 seconds ranks ninth in NCAA Division III.

Collis McKenzie  —  Washington University  —  Brooklyn Park, MN (Minnehaha Academy)

Senior Collis McKenzie of Washington University won the high jump at the I-55 Triangular on Saturday in Bloomington, Illinois. His personal-best mark of 2.00 meters is tied for 16th in NCAA Division III.

Wrestling

Isaac Collier  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Northfield, OH (St. Edward)

Senior Isaac Collier of Case Western Reserve University finished 4-0 as the Spartans split four matches at their Si Ostrach Meet on Saturday. The 165-pounder recorded three pins and a major decision, raising his career total to 25 pins.

Jack La Corte  —  NYU  —  Monmouth Beach, NJ (Christian Brothers Academy)

Senior Jack La Corte won both his bouts as NYU split matches against Manchester University and sixth-ranked Johnson & Wales University at the Stevens Institute of Technology Quad. The 197-pounder earned both victories by major decision.

Women’s Tennis

Lauren Park  —  University of Chicago  —  La Cañada, CA (Polytechnic)

University of Chicago sophomore Lauren Park won both her singles and doubles matches in the Maroons’ 9-0 victory over NCAA Division II Lewis University. She posted a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles and teamed with Catherine Xu for an 8-4 victory at second doubles.

Men’s Tennis

Jeremy Yuan  —  University of Chicago  —  Johns Creek, GA (Northview)

University of Chicago junior Jeremy Yuan won both his singles and doubles matches in the Maroons’ 8-1 victory over NCAA Division II Lewis University. He posted a 7-6 (10-8), 6-3 win at second singles and teamed with Erik Kerrigan for an 8-1 victory at No. 2 doubles.

They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
