Athletes of the Week for February 10, 2020

Women’s Basketball

Julianna Okoniewski  — University of Rochester  —  Selkirk, NY (Bethlehem Central)

University of Rochester sophomore forward Julianna Okoniewski averaged 20.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 2.0 steals, and 1.5 blocks per game as the Yellowjackets recorded wins over Washington University and 13th-ranked University of Chicago. She recorded her third double-double of the season with 22 points and 10 rebounds in Sunday’s 81-75 victory over the Maroons. Okoniewski shot 66.7 percent (14-for-21) from the field in two games, including 7-of-10 in scoring a team-high 18 points in just 14 minutes in the 88-64 win over the Bears on Friday.

Men’s Basketball

Cole Schmitz  —  University of Chicago  —  Madison, WI (Verona)

University of Chicago senior guard Cole Schmitz averaged 19.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 2.0 steals per game to help lead the Maroons to UAA road victories over sixth-ranked Emory University and University of Rochester. He hit six of nine field goals, including 2-of-3 from three-point range, and totaled 18 points and nine boards in an 84-76 win over the Eagles on Friday. Schmitz finished with 21 points, six rebounds, four steals, and three assists in a 68-48 Maroons’ win over the Yellowjackets on Sunday. He shot 58.3 percent (14-of-24) from the floor and 54.5 percent from 3-point territory (6-of-11) in the two games.

Women’s Fencing

Chiara Codazzi  —  NYU  —  Rome, Italy (St. Stephens)

First-year fencer Chiara Codazzi of NYU won all 12 of her foil bouts at the Fairleigh Dickinson University Invitational. She finished 3-0 against all five opponents, two NCAA Division I opponents and three Division III opponents. The Violets won each of their matches, including a 14-13 win over Stevens Institute of Technology.

Men’s Fencing

Ben Rogak  — Brandeis University  —  East Setauket, NY (Ward-Melville)

Freshman Ben Rogak posted an 11-4 record and led the Brandeis University epee squad to a 3-2 mark at the Duke University Invitational. He posted 3-0 marks against fourth-ranked Penn State University and University of North Carolina, adding a 2-1 record against fifth-ranked University of Notre Dame and Johns Hopkins University.

Women’s Swimming and Diving

Camille Valvur  —  NYU  —  Moraga, CA (Campolindo)

NYU first-year competitor Camille Valvur won two events at the team’s home invitational. She bettered her previous best time by more than three seconds in capturing the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.93) and also captured the 100-yard freestyle in 54.76 seconds.

Carmen White  —  NYU  —  Lake Bluff, IL (Lake Forest)

NYU senior Carmen White swept the diving events at the NYU Invitational. She captured the one-meter board with 309 points and won the three-meter event with a season-best score of 306.80 points.

Men’s Swimming and Diving

Jack Kelleher  —  Emory University  —  Auckland, New Zealand (Rosmini College)

Emory University sophomore Jack Kelleher provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Men’s Swimming and Diving Championship in three events at the Auburn University Invitational. He turned in NCAA “B” times of 1:51.28 in the 200-yard individual medley, 3:55.95 in the 400-yard individual medley, and 2:02.40 in the 200-yard breaststroke. The Eagles were the only Division III competitors at the meet.

Cole Vertin  —  NYU  —  San Jose, CA (St. Francis)

NYU sophomore Cole Vertin won one diving event and finished second in the other event at the team’s home invitational. He won the one-meter board (286.15 points) and posted a season-best total of 331.70 points in his runner-up finish in the three-meter event.

Women’s Indoor Track and Field

Samantha Giordani  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Pittsburgh, PA (Ambridge)

First-year runner Samantha Giordani won two events and ran on the winning 1,600-meter relay to help lead the Tartans to a runner-up finish at the seven-team Roanoke College Noke Elite Meet. She won the 200-meter dash (25.77 seconds) and the 400-meter dash (1:00.17), while running on the relay that won in 4:12.36. Her time in the 200 ranks 10th in NCAA Division III.

Isabel Maletich  —  University of Chicago  —  Woodridge, IL (Downers Grove North)

Sophomore Isabel Maletich of University of Chicago recorded the best triple jump mark in NCAA Division III this season at the Windy City Rumble. She won the event with a distance of 12.40 meters. Maletich also broke the program record in the long jump with a leap of 5.77 meters, which ranks third in the nation.

Men’s Indoor Track and Field

Greig Dimailig  —  Washington University  —  La Grange, IL (Fenwick)

Senior Greig Dimailig of Washington University placed second in the 400-meter run and ran on the Bears’ victorious 1,600-meter relay at the Keck DIII Select Invitational in Bloomington, Illinois. His personal-best time of 49.28 seconds in the 400 ranks sixth in NCAA Division III this season.

Dominic Oddo  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Mentor, OH (Mentor)

Senior Dominic Oddo placed third in the heptathlon at the Wide Track Classic in Hillsdale, Michigan with 4,513 points. He earned runner-up finishes in the 60-meter hurdles (8.87 seconds) and the 1,000 meters (2:51.03), adding a third-place finish in the long jump (6.67 meters) and a fourth-place finish in the pole vault (3.50 meters). Oddo’s point total ranks 18th in NCAA Division III this season.

Wrestling

Sean Lyons  —  NYU  —  Sewell, NJ (St. Joseph’s Prep)

NYU senior Sean Lyons won two matches at 157 pounds, including his 100th career victory, on Saturday. He reached the 100-win plateau with a major decision in a 33-9 NYU win over Worcester Polytechnic Institute. 

Baseball - Hitter

Richard Brereton  —  Emory University  —  Darien, CT (Darien)

Senior Richard Brereton finished 4-for-7 with two runs scored and three runs batted in as Emory University opened the season by splitting two games. He went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, two RBI, and two stolen bases in an 8-0 Eagles’ win over Virginia Wesleyan University. Brereton also tossed 5.1 scoreless innings to earn the win on the mound.

Baseball - Pitcher

Jack Brodsky  —  Emory University  —  Woodcliff Lake, NJ (Pascack Hills)

Sophomore Jack Brodsky tossed five scoreless innings in his second collegiate start in a 4-1 Emory University loss to Birmingham-Southern College. He struck out five, while yielding three singles in a no-decision.

Women’s Tennis

Danna Taylor  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Orlando, FL (Circle Christian School)

Carnegie Mellon University sophomore Danna Taylor earned a pair of wins to lead the Tartans to an 8-1 win over 29th-ranked Hope College. She teamed with Courtney Ollis for an 8-7 (7-4) win at No. 1 doubles before earning a 6-2, 6-1 victory at first singles. Both wins came against NCAA championship qualifiers from last year.

Men’s Tennis

Matthew Chen  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Wynnewood, PA (Lower Merion)

Case Western Reserve University junior Matthew Chen combined to finish 5-0 in singles and doubles to lead the 12th-ranked Spartans to three wins to open their season. Two of his doubles wins came with freshman James Hopper at the No. 1 spot, including a win over the fourth-ranked duo from NAIA University of Northwestern Ohio. Chen recorded a 6-2, 6-2 victory at second singles in that match and a three-set win at first singles against Hope College.

 

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
