Athletes of the Week for February 17, 2020

Women’s Basketball

Kristina Schmelter  — Washington University  —  St. Louis, MO (Cor Jesu Academy)

Senior forward Kristina Schmelter averaged 20.5 points and 10.0 rebounds per game in a pair of Washington University home victories. She shot 55.2 percent (16-for-29) from the field and hit nine of 11 free throws in two games. Schmelter tallied 24 points and grabbed a career-best 15 boards in the Bears’ 66-52 win over Carnegie Mellon University on Sunday after netting 17 points in an 88-71 victory over Case Western Reserve University on Friday.

Men’s Basketball

Lawrence Rowley  —  Emory University  —  Ypsilanti, MI (Huron)

Junior forward Lawrence Rowley averaged 17.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game to help lead ninth-ranked Emory University to home wins over NYU and Brandeis University. He shot 60.0 percent from the floor (12-for-20), 62.56 percent from three-point range (5-of-8), and 85.7 percent from the line (6-for-7). Rowley totaled 21 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and two steals in the Eagles’ 93-65 win over the Judges on Sunday.

DeVaughn Rucker  — Washington University  —  Florissant, MO (Whitfield School)

Senior forward DeVaughn Rucker averaged 17.0 points and 5.0 rebounds, while shooting 80.0 percent from the field, to help lead Washington University to home wins over Case Western Reserve University and Carnegie Mellon University. He hit four of five field goals and eight of 10 free throws in the Bears’ 77-71 win over the Spartans on Friday, and then connected on eight of 10 field goals to net 17 points in a 99-68 victory over the Tartans on Sunday.

Women’s Fencing

Chiara Codazzi  —  NYU  —  Rome, Italy (St. Stephens)

NYU first-year fencer Chiara Codazzi finished 7-2 in the foil as the Violets won two of three bouts at Columbia University. She finished 3-0 to lift the Violets to a 14-13 win over Vassar College, and posted  2-1 marks in a win over Sacred Heart University and a loss to second-ranked Columbia.

Men’s Fencing

Darren Yen  — NYU  —  Chatham, NJ (Chatham)

NYU freshman Darren Yen won two of three bouts in the sabre as the Violets defeated top-ranked and defending NCAA champion Columbia University on Wednesday. He also finished ninth in a field of nearly 300 competitors at the USA Fencing Junior Olympic Championships in Columbus, Ohio on Sunday.

Women’s Swimming and Diving

Honore Collins  —  NYU  —  Evanston, IL (Evanston Township)

Senior Honore Collins of NYU was named the UAA Women’s Swimmer of the Year at the 2020 UAA Swimming and Diving Championships hosted by University of Chicago. She broke UAA records in winning the 200-yard butterfly (2:01.07) and the 200-yard individual medley (1:59.73). Collins added a win in the 400-yard individual medley (4:18.54) and as part of the Violets’ winning 200-yard medley relay (1:42.57) and 400-yard medley relay, which broke the program record in 3:43.60.

Agnes Lo  —  University of Chicago  —  Fremont, CA (Mission San Jose)

Agnes Lo of University of Chicago swept the diving events to earn UAA Women’s Diver of the Year honors at the 2020 UAA Swimming and Diving Championships hosted by the Maroons. She took the one-meter dive with a score of 506.65 points and the three-meter event with a mark of 525.90 to earn the top Association award for the third time.

Men’s Swimming and Diving

Giorgio DelGrosso  —  NYU  —  Keego Harbor, MI (Cranbrook Kingswood)

Senior Giorgio DelGrosso of NYU shared the UAA Men’s Swimmer of the Year award at the 2020 UAA Swimming and Diving Championships hosted by University of Chicago. He set program records in winning the 100- (53.23 seconds) and 200-yard (1:57.55) breaststroke events. DelGrosso also placed third in the 200-yard individual medley (1:50.20).

Arthur Kiselnikov  —  University of Chicago  —  Melbourne, Australia (Caulfield)

Freshman Arthur Kiselnikov of University of Chicago shared the UAA Men’s Swimmer of the Year award at the 2020 UAA Swimming and Diving Championships hosted by the Maroons. He equaled the UAA record in winning the 100-yard freestyle (44.30 seconds) and broke the Association record in the 200-yard freestyle (1:36.66 seconds, just 0.2 seconds off NCAA record) to also earn UAA Men’s Rookie of the Year honors. Kiselnikov broke his own mark in the 100 with a 44.29 second split in the meet’s final relay.

Lucas Bumgarner  —  Emory University  —  Pittsburgh, PA (Mt. Lebanon)

Sophomore Lucas Bumgarner of Emory University repeated as UAA Men’s Diver of the Year at the 2020 UAA Swimming and Diving Championships hosted by University of Chicago. He won the three-meter dive with a score of 599.10, broke the program record in the preliminaries with 615.60 points, and captured the one-meter event with 575.10 points after breaking the program record with a preliminary score of 581.10.

Women’s Indoor Track and Field

Caira Watson-Haynes  —  Washington University  —  Chicago, IL (St. Ignatius College Prep)

Washington University junior Caira Watson-Haynes ran the fourth-fastest time in NCAA Division III this season in the 60-meter hurdles at the Midwest ELITE Invitational in Whitewater, Wisconsin. She placed second in the event in 8.76 seconds. Watson-Haynes finished sixth in the 200 meters (26.64 seconds) and the 60 meters (8.12 seconds).

Isabel Maletich  —  University of Chicago  —  Woodridge, IL (Downers Grove North)

University of Chicago sophomore Isabel Maletich posted the top long jump mark in NCAA Division III this season at the North Central College Pat Heenan Invitational. She leaped a distance of 5.88 meters.

Men’s Indoor Track and Field

John Harry Wagner  —  Washington University  —  St. Louis, MO (John Burroughs)

Washington University junior John Harry Wagner ran the third-fastest time in the 400-meter run NCAA Division III this season at the Midwest ELITE Invitational in Whitewater, Wisconsin. He won the 400 with a time of 49.10 seconds.

Matt Moore  —  Washington University  —  Waukee, IA (Dowling Catholic)

Washington University sophomore Matt Moore placed fourth in the long jump at the Midwest ELITE Invitational in Whitewater, Wisconsin. His mark of 7.10 meters ranks 13th in NCAA Division III this season.

Wrestling

Sean Lyons  —  NYU  —  Sewell, NJ (St. Joseph’s Prep, PA)

Senior Sean Lyons of NYU was named Most Valuable Player of the 2020 UAA Wrestling Championships hosted by the Violets at the Brooklyn Athletic Center on Saturday. He won both his matches at 157 pounds to help lead the hosts to the UAA title. Lyons defeated Mitchell Arch of Case Western Reserve University by technical fall (17-0) and won by major decision (11-1) over University of Chicago All-American Steve Bonsall.

Baseball - Hitter

Jack Masonis  —  Emory University  —  Charlotte, NC (Myers Park)

Emory University freshman Jack Masonis finished 2-for-3 with three runs batted in as the Eagles blasted Millsaps College, 18-1, in the only contest of a rain-shortened weekend. He collected the first two hits of his career, including the first for extra bases.

Baseball - Pitcher

Richard Brereton  —  Emory University  —  Darien, CT (Darien)

Emory University senior pitcher Richard Brereton allowed just one unearned run on three hits in five innings in the Eagles’ 18-1 drubbing of Millsaps College on Saturday. He struck out seven batters and did not issue a walk to move to 2-0 in the team’s first three games.

Women’s Tennis

Perene Wang  —  University of Chicago  —  New York, NY (Bronx HS of Science)

First-year player Perene Wang finished a combined 6-0 in singles and doubles as University of Chicago won all three of its matches over the weekend. She teamed with Claudia Ng for three wins at No. 1 doubles in Maroons’ wins over Kalamazoo College, 28th-ranked Hope College, and 29th-ranked UAA rival Case Western Reserve University. Wang dropped just one game in four sets at fifth singles against Kalamazoo and Hope before defeating the Spartans’ Nicole Cardwell in three sets, 10-4 in the superbreaker.

Men’s Tennis

Benjamin van der Sman  —  Washington University  —  Woodbury, MN (East Ridge)

Junior Benjamin van der Sman picked up a pair of victories as ninth-ranked Washington University defeated NCAA Division II 13th-ranked Southwest Baptist University, 5-4, on Sunday. He teamed with Bernardo Neves for an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles and then clinched the match with a 7-5, 6-7 (8-10), 10-7 victory at fourth singles.

They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
