Athletes of the Week for February 25, 2019

Women’s Basketball

Kara Hageman — Case Western Reserve University  —  Pennington, NJ (Hopewell Valley Central)

Graduate student Kara Hageman ended her career with 22 points and 16 rebounds in a 69-52 Case Western Reserve University win over visiting Carnegie Mellon University. She connected on eight of 11 field goals, including all three of her 3-point attempts, with a season-high five assists and three steals. Hageman recorded her 11th double-double of the season and 21st of her career.

Ashley Oldshue — Emory University  —  Glenview, IL (Glenbrook South)

Senior center Ashley Oldshue scored 24 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds to lead Emory University to a 78-54 victory over University of Rochester in the regular season finale for both teams. She made 12 of 15 field goals in eclipsing the 20-point mark for the seventh time this season.

Men’s Basketball

Jack Nolan — Washington University  —  Downers Grove, IL (Benet Academy)

Sophomore guard Jack Nolan scored 17 of his career-high 26 points in the second half to lift Washington University to a season-ending 81-63 win over visiting University of Chicago. He hit 11 of 18 field goals, including three 3-pointers, and contributed six assists, five steals, and four rebounds.

Women’s Fencing

Tiffany Luong — NYU  —  Newton, MA (Newtown North)

NYU sophomore Tiffany Luong finished 18-0 in foil competition as the Violets posted a 5-1 mark at the Fairleigh Dickinson University Invitational on Sunday. She won all three of her matches against all six opponents, including three NCAA Division I teams, Division II Long Island University-Post, and Division III opponents Drew University and Stevens Institute of Technology. 

Women’s Swimming and Diving

Suhan Mestha — Case Western Reserve University  —  Fairport, NY (Fairport)

Case Western Reserve University senior Suhan Mestha swam on three relay teams that broke two program records and recorded three NCAA “B” cuts at the 2019 Midwest Invitational. The Spartans’ 200-yard freestyle (1:34.95) and 400-yard medley relay (3:50.41) each broke program records in posting first-place finishes. Mestha closed out the meet as a member of the winning 200-yard medley relay (1:44.73).

Anya Koné — Emory University  —  Columbus, OH (Columbus Academy)

Emory University senior Anya Koné provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships in two events at the Midwest Invitational. She claimed wins in the 100-yard backstroke (57.68 seconds) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:05.77).

Men’s Swimming and Diving

Pat Pema — Emory University  —  Columbus, OH (St. Charles)

Freshman Pat Pema of Emory University provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships in two events at the Midwest Invitational. He touched first in the 200-yard individual medley (1:51.26) and the 200-yard backstroke (1:49.13). Pema swam a 200 backstroke time of 1:48.07 during time trials.

Kevin Hao — Washington University  —  Canton, MI (Cranbrook Kingswood School)

Washington University freshman Kevin Hao provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships in the 200-yard breaststroke at the Midwest Invitational. He placed first in the event with a time of 2:02.22, which met the 2018 championship qualification standard.

Wrestling

Ben Sarasin — University of Chicago  —  Cedar Rapids, IA (J.F. Kennedy)

University of Chicago freshman Ben Sarasin won the 174-pound title at the NCAA Division III Upper Midwest Regional on Saturday. He finished 4-0 to automatically qualify for the NCAA championship, including an 11-9 semifinal victory over his opponent from Augsburg College. The Maroons finished fifth in the 17-team regional.

Baseball

John Ostrander — Washington University  —  Sammamish, WA (Seattle Preparatory School)

Junior outfielder John Ostrander finished 5-for-10 with three extra-base hits and five runs batted in as Washington University split its first two games of the season. He doubled once, hit two triples, and scored three runs for the Bears, who produced 22 runs and 30 hits in the two contests.

Matt Levine — Case Western Reserve University  —  Boca Raton, FL (Olympic Heights Community)

Sophomore right-handed pitcher Matt Levine allowed just one earned run over 8.1 innings of work in a
3-2 Case Western Reserve University loss in 10 innings at Spalding University on Sunday. He yielded four hits and three walks, while striking out five.

Softball

Natalie Arreguin — Emory University  —  Lee’s Summit, MO (Notre Dame de Sion)

Emory University sophomore Natalie Arreguin went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two runs batted in during the Eagles’ 9-7 season-opening loss to Berry College. She socked a two-run double in a five-run third inning.

Women’s Tennis

Coco Kulle — NYU  —  Vienna, Austria (Choate Rosemary Hall, CT)

NYU junior Coco Kulle won all four of her matches as the Violets opened their spring season with wins over Haverford College and Christopher Newport University. She earned a pair of wins at No. 1 singles and captured two wins at first doubles with Fleura Shiyanova.

Men’s Tennis

Joshua Xu —  University of Chicago  —  Chandler, AZ (BASIS Chandler)

Freshman Joshua Xu finished a combined 5-1 in singles and doubles to help lead University of Chicago to its first Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III National Team Indoor Championship title. He dropped a total of 12 games in six sets in winning all three of his matches at No. 6 singles, and teamed with senior Charlie Pei for two victories at third doubles. The Maroons defeated Case Western Reserve University, Washington University, and three-time defending ITA champion Emory University.

 

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
