Athletes of the Week for March 2, 2020

Women’s Basketball

Janean Cuffee  — NYU  —  New York, NY (The Lawrenceville School)

Junior guard Janean Cuffee scored a game-high 31 points, hitting six 3-pointers, to lead NYU to a 91-73 win at Brandeis University on Saturday. She added six rebounds as the Violets won their 20th game and finished tied for second place in the UAA. Cuffee finished the regular season with five 30+ point scoring performances.

Men’s Basketball

Brennan McDaniel  —  University of Chicago  —  Roswell, GA (Woodward Academy)

Junior forward Brennan McDaniel scored 23 points, hitting all five of his 3-point attempts, as University of Chicago upset 13th-ranked Washington University, 77-70. He added four rebounds and three assists to lead the Maroons back from a double-digit deficit in the second half.

Women’s Fencing

Jessica Morales  — Brandeis University  —  Wilmington, MA (Wilmington)

Competing for Colombia at the Junior Pan American Games in San Salvador, El Salvador, Brandeis University first-year fencer Jessica Morales earned a bronze medal in the sabre. She finished 5-1 to win her pool and earn the seventh seed into direct elimination. Morales then defeated opponents from Guatemala and the U.S. before upsetting the world’s fourth-ranked junior from Princeton University before falling in the semifinals to her opponent from Mexico.

Women’s Swimming and Diving

Elizabeth Cron  — University of Chicago  —  Cincinnati, OH (Oak Hills)

University of Chicago sophomore Elizabeth Cron swept the diving events at the NCAA Diving Regional hosted by Denison University. She captured the one-meter event with a score of 458.25 and the three-meter board with a score of 457.10 to qualify for the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships.

Men’s Swimming and Diving

Lucas Bumgarner  —  Emory University  —  Pittsburgh, PA (Mt. Lebanon)

Emory University sophomore Lucas Bumgarner swept the diving events at the NCAA Diving Regional in San Antonio, Texas. He posted a score of 591.55 on the three-meter board and 529.65 in the one-meter event to qualify for the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships.

Wrestling

Sean Lyons  —  NYU  —  Sewell, NJ (St. Joseph’s Prep, PA)

NYU senior Sean Lyons was named the NCAA Northeast Regional Most Outstanding Wrestler in winning the 157-pound title. He won his first two matches by fall and final two matches by technical fall to earn a spot in the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships. NYU finished third of 17 teams.

Baseball - Hitter

Sean Robinson  —  Washington University  —  Tinley Park, IL (Lincoln-Way East)

Junior outfielder Sean Robinson batted .889 (8-for-9) and reached base in each of his final 12 plate appearances as the Bears swept a three-game series with Illinois Institute of Technology. He recorded hits in each of his last eight-bats and finished the three-game set with five runs scored, five runs batted in, four walks, and two stolen bases.

Baseball - Pitcher

Nick Denove  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Naples, FL (Barron Collier)

Sophomore left-handed pitcher Nick Denove tossed a complete game five-hitter to lead Case Western Reserve University to a 3-1 win over 10th-ranked College of Wooster. He retired the first 10 batters he faced, did not walk a hitter, and fanned a career-high nine while coming within one out of a shutout.

Softball - Hitter

Amy Walsh  —  Washington University  —  Lakewood, IL (Crystal Lake Central)

Senior outfielder Amy Walsh hit .438 (7-for-16) with four runs scored, four runs batted in, and six stolen bases as Washington University opened its season with three wins in four games. She recorded three multi-hit games and stole a program-record four bases in a 5-4, 10-inning victory over Carroll University.

Softball - Pitcher

Holly Stoner  —  Washington University  —  La Cañada, CA (La Cañada)

Sophomore pitcher Holly Stoner posted a 2-0 record with a 1.80 earned run average as Washington University opened its season with three wins in four games. She allowed seven hits and three earned runs in 11.2 innings, while limiting opponents to a .163 batting average. Stoner allowed one run in 4.2 innings of relief to earn the victory in the Bears’ 5-4, 10-inning victory over Carroll University.

Women’s Tennis

Christina Watson  —  Emory University  —  Houston, TX (St. Agnes Academy)

Emory University sophomore Christina Watson finished with a combined 5-1 record in singles and doubles to help lead the third-ranked Eagles to a runner-up finish at the ITA Division III National Women’s Team Indoor Championship. She earned three wins at No. 4 singles, including a 7-5, 6-2 victory in a 5-4 loss to second-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in the title match and teamed with Stephanie Taylor for two wins at first doubles in the tournament.

Men’s Tennis

Matthew Chen  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Wynnewood, PA (Lower Merion)

Case Western Reserve University junior Matthew Chen led the ninth-ranked Spartans to three 9-0 wins last weekend, finishing 3-0 at No. 1 doubles and 2-0 at first singles. The top-ranked doubles team in NCAA Division III, Chen and freshman James Hopper won three doubles matches by a combined 24-8 score. Chen dropped just one set in singles.
 

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
