Athletes of the Week for March 16, 2020

Baseball - Hitter

Grant Berman  —  NYU  —  Encino, CA (Notre Dame)

Sophomore Grant Berman finished 2-for-3 with a home run and four runs batted in an 11-0 NYU win over John Jay College. He completed the abbreviated season as the team leader in batting average (.444), hits, runs, total bases, and on-base percentage.

Baseball - Pitcher

Matt Ashbaugh  —  Washington University  —  Houston, TX (St. Thomas)

Senior pitcher Matt Ashbaugh allowed four hits and struck out five in seven shutout innings as sixth-ranked Washington University defeated Dickinson College, 7-0, in its season finale. He moved to 3-0 in the shortened season.

Women’s Golf

Nadia Susanto  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Irvine, CA (Arnold O. Beckman)

Carnegie Mellon University sophomore Nadia Susanto claimed individual medalist honors as the top-ranked Tartans won the Savannah Invitational. She carded a 36-hole score of 149, shooting rounds of 74 and 75 on the par-72 Savannah Quarters Country Club.

Men’s Golf

Jason Li  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Sewickley, PA (Sewickley Academy)
Jason Folker  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Lake Forest, IL (Lake Forest)

Carnegie Mellon University juniors Jason Li and Jason Folker tied for second place as the Tartans won the 18-team Savannah Invitational. The team set program marks in shooting a 19-under par 269 in the final round and each carded a 54-hole program record of 204. Li fired rounds of 70, 68, and a program record-tying 66. Folker carded a first-round 70 followed by back-to-back career-best rounds of 67.

Softball - Hitter

Emily Song  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Mount Arlington, NJ (Roxbury)

Sophomore Emily Song batted .480 (12-for-25) with seven runs scored and five runs batted in as the Tartans posted a 5-3 mark in Florida. She added two doubles, a home run, and six stolen bases. Song totaled three hits, including a double, and two runs scored in the Tartans’ season-ending 3-1 win over Skidmore College.   

Dusstyn Reynolds  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Wooster, OH (Wooster)

Junior Dusstyn Reynolds batted .469 (15-for-32) with six runs scored and seven runs batted in as Case Western Reserve Univerity posted a 5-3 mark on its spring break trip. She recorded five multi-hit games, including a 4-for-4 performance in the Spartans’ 4-3 loss to Nebraska Wesleyan University. Reynolds drove in a pair of runs in the season finale, a 12-2 win over Defiance College.   

Softball - Pitcher

Maggie Swan  —  NYU  —  Annandale, NJ (North Hunterdon)

Sophomore pitcher Maggie Swan tossed a complete-game three-hitter to lead NYU to a 4-0 victory over Rutgers University-Newark. She did not walk a hitter and struck out five.

Women’s Tennis

Alexa Goetz  —  Emory University  —  Greenlawn, NY (Harborfields)

Emory University first-year player Alexa Goetz earned a pair of singles and doubles wins as the Eagles completed their season with wins over NCAA Division I Lehigh University and fifth-ranked Carnegie Mellon University. She posted straight-set wins at No. 2 singles against the Mountain Hawks and No. 3 singles versus the Tartans. Goetz teamed with classmate Katelyn Thomas for two victories at third doubles.

Men’s Tennis

Anthony Kanam  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Canton, OH (Jackson)

Case Western Reserve University senior Anthony Kanam finished a combined 9-0 in singles and doubles as the Spartans were undefeated on their spring break trip. He dropped just 15 games in 10 sets in singles, winning all five matches in straight sets. Kanam teamed with Neil Mabee for three doubles wins and teamed with James Hopper for another victory.


Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
