Athletes of the Week for March 20, 2023

Women’s Swimming and Diving

Kaley McIntyre  —  NYU  —  Novato, CA (Novato)

First-year swimmer Kaley McIntyre of NYU won two individual events and swam on four All-America relays at the NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships in Greensboro, North Carolina. She broke program records in capturing national titles in the 50-yard freestyle (22.78 seconds) and 200-yard freestyle (1:47.44). Three of the four top-eight relays she swam on broke NYU records, including the 400-yard freestyle relay that finished second in 3:21.66.

Ariana Khan  —  Emory University  —  Pepper Pike, OH (Hawken School)

Sophomore Ariana Khan of Emory University became the first diver in Emory University history to be named College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America Diver of the Year at the NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships in Greensboro, North Carolina. She became the first Eagles’ diving national champion in three decades in winning the three-meter event (478.40 points) before adding a runner-up finish (429.80 points) on the one-meter board.

Men’s Swimming and Diving

Pat Pema  —  Emory University  —  Columbus, OH (St. Charles)

Emory University senior Pat Pema won one individual event and earned six All-America honors to help lead the Eagles to a second consecutive national championship at the NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships in Greensboro, North Carolina. He won the 500-yard freestyle (4:20.41), placed second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:36.09), and tied for fourth in the 100-yard freestyle. Pema swam the anchor leg of the Eagles’ NCAA record-setting 800-yard freestyle relay (6:26.98) and was part of the third-place 200- and 400-yard freestyle relay events.

Lucas Bumgarner  —  Emory University  —  Pittsburgh, PA (Mt. Lebanon)

Emory University senior Lucas Bumgarner earned runner-up finishes in both diving events at the NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships in Greensboro, North Carolina. He posted a score of 520.50 points on the one-meter board and 590.80 points in the three-meter event.

Baseball

Jack Anderson  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Clarkston, MI (Clarkston)

Senior catcher Jack Anderson batted .462 (12-for-26) with eight doubles and eight runs batted in during a 3-2 week for Case Western Reserve University. He batted 6-for-10 with four runs scored, five doubles, and three RBI in a doubleheader split with 17th-ranked State University of New York at Cortland. Anderson finished 5-for-11 with five RBI in a sweep of Adrian College.

Clayton Miller  —  Washington University  —  Houston, TX (Stratford)

Junior Clayton Miller batted .474 (9-for-19) with eight runs scored, seven extra-base hits, and seven runs batted in during a 3-2 week for Washington University. He homered twice and knocked in four runs in a 15-6 Bears’ victory over Westfield State University. Miller finished 3-for-7 with four runs scored and two RBI in a split with Gustavus Adolphus College.

Kyle Gearding  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Cincinnati, OH (Anderson)

Sophomore right-handed pitcher Kyle Gearding threw a career-high seven innings with a career-high eight strikeouts in a 6-3 Case Western Reserve University win over Adrian College on Thursday. He scattered six hits, two runs, and walked just one batter to earn the victory.

Women’s Golf

Sydney Kuo  —  Washington University  —  South Plainfield, NJ (The Wardlaw+Hartridge School)

Washington University sophomore Sydney Kuo earned individual medalist honors at the prestigious Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational. She shot rounds of 70, 76, and 72 to shoot a three-day total of 218 and earn a one-stroke victory over the runner-up.

Men’s Golf

Michael Burry  —  Emory University  —  Saratoga, CA (Saratoga)

Emory University sophomore Michael Burry placed second individually to help lead Emory University to the team title at the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational that featured each of the top-five teams in NCAA Division III. He shot a seven-under par 209 (70-68-71) and ranked second in the field with 15 birdies.

Softball

Amanda Riely  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Park City, UT (Park City)

Senior infielder Amanda Riely batted .577 (15-for-26) with six extra-base hits, eight runs scored, and five runs batted in as Case Western Reserve University finished the week 8-0 and established a program record with 14 consecutive wins. She finished 3-for-3 with a solo home run in the Spartans’ 3-2 win over Babson College on Monday and homered again and drove in three runs in a 4-3 victory over Westminster College (PA). Riely finished the week hitting a combined 6-for-7 with three runs scored in wins over Hope College and University of Wisconsin-Stout on Friday.

Alex Cohen  —  Brandeis University  —  West Palm Beach, FL (The Benjamin School)

Junior hurler Alex Cohen tossed a complete-game three-hitter with 15 strikeouts in a 4-0 Brandeis University win in the second game of a doubleheader sweep of Wentworth Institute of Technology. She added a run-scoring double.

Kylie Hosey  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Medina, OH (Medina)

Sophomore pitcher Kylie Hosey finished 4-0 with a 0.30 earned run average and 25 strikeouts as seventh-ranked Case Western Reserve University went undefeated on its spring break trip to Winter Haven, Florida. She allowed just one earned run in four starts, fanning at least five batters in each outing. Hosey finished the week with a two-hitter over six innings with no walks and seven strikeouts in a 5-1 Spartans’ win over University of Wisconsin-Stout.

Women’s Tennis

Sylwia Mikos  —  University of Chicago  —  Willowbrook, IL (Hinsdale South)

University of Chicago sophomore Sylwia Mikos finished a combined 4-0 in singles and doubles to lead top-ranked University of Chicago to wins over 15th-ranked Trinity University (TX) and 18th-ranked Southwestern University. She dropped a total of five games in four sets in her singles victories at No. 1, and teamed with Shianna Guo and Nicole Geller for wins at No. 1 doubles.

Men’s Tennis

Dean Kamenev  —  Emory University  —  Hinsdale, IL (Hinsdale Central)

Emory University freshman Dean Kamenev finished 3-0 in singles and doubles as Emory posted home wins over 10th-ranked Denison University, Birmingham-Southern College, and Washington College. He earned a three-set singles win against the Big Red before earning a pair of straight-set victories. Kamenev teamed with Nolan Shah for three consecutive 8-3 decisions at third doubles.

Women’s Outdoor Track and Field

Audrey Johnson  — Emory University  —  Warrington, PA (Central Bucks South)

Emory University sophomore Audrey Johnson recorded the fastest NCAA Division III 100-meter dash time of the weekend at the Eagles’ Spring Break Classic. She placed third in 12.07 seconds and ran the anchor leg of the winning 400-meter relay that posted a time of 48.17 seconds.

Katie Monahan  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Cranberry Township, PA (Seneca Valley)

Carnegie Mellon University sophomore Katie Monahan broke her own program record in the shot put with a winning toss of 12.44 meters at the Washington & Lee University Track & Field Carnival. She added a career-best throw in the hammer (42.49 meters) and a mark of 35.23 meters in the discus. Her shot put distance ranked third in NCAA Division III over the weekend.

Men’s Outdoor Track and Field

Spencer Moore  —  Emory University  —  Rochester, MN (Mayo)

Emory University senior Spencer Moore posted the top NCAA Division III time in the opening weekend of the season in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Eagles’ Spring Break Classic. He won the event in a time of 9:14.59 and anchored the winning 3,200-meter relay team that posted a time of 7:54.10.

Thomas Rich  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Rochester, NY (Brighton)

Carnegie Mellon University junior Thomas Rich won the long jump and finished second in the high jump at the Washington & Lee University Track & Field Carnival. He won the long jump with a leap of 6.95 meters, the sixth-best in Division III over the weekend, and placed second in the high jump with a career-best mark of 1.04 meters. Rich also finished third in the 110-meter hurdles (15.59 seconds) and fifth in the 400-meter hurdles (57.72 seconds).

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
