Athletes of the Week for March 22, 2021

Baseball - Hitter

Tim Van Kirk  —  Washington University  —  Arcadia, CA (Arcadia)

Washington University junior Tim Van Kirk batted .600 (6-for-10) with four runs scored and four stolen bases as the Bears swept a three-game series against DePauw University to start the season 8-0 for the first time since 2006. He recorded two hits in all three games, finishing the weekend with a double and two runs batted in on Sunday in the Bears’ 9-4 victory.

Baseball - Pitcher

Troy Bauer  —  Washington University  —  Allen, TX (Allen)

Washington University senior hurler Troy Bauer tossed a complete game one-hit shutout in the Bears’
10-0 triumph in the second game of a doubleheader sweep on Saturday. He walked one batter and struck out six. The Bears are 8-0 to start the season for the first time since 2006.

Women’s Golf

Denise Pan  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Houston, TX (St. John’s School)

First-year golfer Denise Pan helped lead Carnegie Mellon University to a third-place finish at the 54-hole Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational. She opened her career with rounds of 79, 74, and 77 for a 230 total to place fourth in the 82-player field.

Men’s Golf

Max Schwarz  —  Emory University  —  Paradise Valley, AZ (Brophy College Prep)

Junior Max Schwarz led Emory University to a third-place finish in the 25-team field at the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational. He tied for second of 133 competitors with a four-under par 212 in three rounds, logging 13 birdies. Schwarz has shot par or better in all five rounds he has played this season.

Softball - Hitter

Summer Faille  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Thousand Oaks, CA (Westlake)

Carnegie Mellon University junior leftfielder Summer Faille batted .583 (7-for-12) with six runs scored, four extra-base hits, eight runs batted in, and a 1.250 slugging percentage as the Tartans opened the season 3-1. She doubled, tripled, and homered while knocking in seven runs in a doubleheader sweep of University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg on Wednesday. Faille finished 4-for-8 with two runs scored, a triple, and one RBI in the Tartans’ split with Hiram College.

Tami Wong  —  Washington University  —  Alton, IL (Alton)

Washington University sophomore Tami Wong finished 5-for-7 with three runs scored, two home runs, and six runs batted in to lead the Bears to a sweep of Westminster College (MO) on Saturday. She hit both home runs and drove in five runs in a 11-4 win in the second game of the doubleheader.

Softball - Pitcher

Sidney Brannam  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Austin, TX (St. Dominic Savio Catholic)

Case Western Reserve University senior pitcher Sidney Brannam posted a 4-0 record with a 1.20 earned run average in five appearances. She began the week with a one-hit shutout with one walk and seven strikeouts in a 4-0 Spartans’ victory over Wittenberg University on Tuesday and ended the week with another complete game one-hitter in a 6-1 win over Defiance College. For the week, Brannam allowed just four earned runs and 14 hits in 23.1 innings, striking out 23 batters.

Women’s Tennis

Christina Watson  —  Emory University  —  Houston, TX (St. Agnes Academy)

Junior Christina Watson finished 4-0 combined in singles and doubles as Emory University posted a pair of victories over Sewanee: The University of the South in their season-opening matches. She did not drop a set in winning two matches at No. 2 singles and teamed with Stephanie Taylor to earn two doubles victories, first at second doubles and then at No. 1 doubles.

Men’s Tennis

Pasquale Procaccino  —  University of Rochester  —  Alexandria, VA (T.C. Williams)

Junior Pasquale Procaccino earned both points in a University of Rochester loss to Hobart College. He teamed with Kai Yuminaga for an 8-1 victory at first doubles before earning a three-set victory over his 2019 All-American opponent at No. 1 singles. Procaccino won 7-5, 2-6, 6-2.

Women’s Outdoor Track and Field

Claire Evans  —  Emory University  —  Sugar Land, TX (William P. Clements)

Sophomore Claire Evans won both hurdle events as Emory University placed second at the Panther Invitational at Clark Atlanta University. She won the 100-meter hurdles in 16.25 seconds and the 400 in 1:09.50. Evans ran the anchor leg of the runner-up 1,600-meter relay that ran the sixth-fastest NCAA Division III time of the season in 4:10.87. The Eagles placed second of eight scoring teams behind NCAA Division I University of Tennessee-Chattanooga.

Laura Sheckter  —  Emory University  —  Manhattan Beach, CA (Mira Costa)

Senior Laura Sheckter broke the 37-year-old Emory University record in the shot put at the Panther Invitational at Clark Atlanta University. Her mark of 12.84 meters ranks first in NCAA Division III this season. The Eagles placed second of eight scoring teams behind NCAA Division I University of Tennessee-Chattanooga.

Men’s Outdoor Track and Field

Spencer Watry  —  Emory University  —  Milton, GA (Milton)

Freshman Spencer Watry won the 800-meter run at the Panther Invitational at Clark Atlanta University. His time of 1:56.39 ranks sixth in NCAA Division III this season. Watry also ran on the runner-up 1,600-meter relay team that ran the seventh-fastest time in Division III after the weekend with a time of 3:25.11. The Eagles finished first of five scoring teams.

Brett Henshey  —  Emory University  —  West Grove, PA (Salesianum School)

Junior Brett Henshey recorded a mark of 1.95 meters to win the high jump at the Panther Invitational at Clark Atlanta University. His mark places him second among NCAA Division III competitors this season. The Eagles finished first of five scoring teams.

They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
