Athletes of the Week for April 3, 2023

Baseball

Henry Pelinski  —  Emory University  —  Winnetka, IL (New Trier)

Senior outfielder Henry Pelinski batted .533 (8-for-15) with three runs scored and eight runs batted in as Emory University won three of four games at Case Western Reserve University. He recorded three multi-hit games, including hitting 3-for-4 with a double, home run, and five RBI in an 8-7 win in the first game of a doubleheader on Sunday.

Alex VanLandingham  —  NYU  —  Atlanta, GA (The Mount Vernon School)

Junior outfielder Alex VanLandingham batted .643 (9-for-14) with six runs scored and five runs batted in as NYU won three of four games against Brandeis University. He hit 3-for-3 in both a 7-6 win on Saturday and a 21-0 victory on Sunday. VanLandingham hit his first home run of the season in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader as the Violets registered back-to-back one-run wins.

Joey Bock  —  Emory University  —  St. Louis, MO (John Burroughs School)

Senior hurler Joey Bock twirled seven shutout innings while tying a career-high in strikeouts as Emory University won the second game of the series at Case Western Reserve University, 11-1. He yielded five hits, walked just one, and struck out nine.

Women’s Golf

Irene Park  —  NYU  —  Rowland Heights, CA (Diamond Bar)

NYU first-year golfer Irene Park captured the individual title at the Vassar College Invitational on Saturday, shooting a two-under par 70 to lead the 40-player field. She tied for third with a two-over par 74 the following day at the Vassar College Classic. The Violets earned the team title at both events.

Sydney Kuo  —  Washington University  —  South Plainfield, NJ (The Wardlaw+Hartridge School)

Washington University sophomore Sydney Kuo earned individual medalist honors to help lead the Bears to the team title at the Bears’ Spring Invitational. She shot back-to-back rounds of par 72 for a 144 two-day total.

Softball

Ella Hoyle  —  Emory University  —  Tualatin, OR (Lakeridge)

First-year infielder Ella Hoyle batted .615 (8-for-13) with three runs batted in as Emory University split a four-game home series with Brandeis University. She recorded multiple hits in three of the four contests, hitting 3-for-4 with two RBI in the season opener. Hoyle added four hits and two runs scored in two games against St. Olaf College earlier in the week.

Amanda Smith  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  New Cumberland, PA (Trinity)

Junior pitcher Amanda Smith posted a 2-0 record and 0.50 earned run average in two complete games to lead Carnegie Mellon University to a pair of wins over visiting NYU. She yielded seven hits and three walks, while striking out 13, in 14 innings in 7-1 and 7-0 Tartans’ victories.

Lexi Miskey  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Pittsford, NY (Pittsford Mendon)

Sophomore pitcher Lexi Miskey posted a 3-0 record with a 1.37 earned run average as part of a Case Western Reserve University sweep of visiting Washington University. In 15.1 innings, she gave up eight hits and three earned runs, while striking out 22.

Women’s Tennis

Karina Jensrud  —  NYU —  Oslo, Norway (Laurel Springs School, CA)

NYU senior Karina Jensrud won all four of her matches as the Violets posted wins over UAA rivals Brandeis University and University of Rochester. Playing No. 2 singles, she dropped just two games in a win over Sanjana Karnam of the Yellowjackets and earned a three-set win after dropping the first set over Bhakti Parwani of the Judges. Jensrud teamed with Molly Heber for a pair of wins at second doubles.

Men’s Tennis

Pato Garcia Muriel  —  Washington University  —  Mexico City, Mexico (St. Stephen’s Episcopal School)
Colin Scruggs  —  Washington University  —  Southlake, TX (Southlake Carroll)

Sophomore Pato Garcia Muriel and freshman Colin Scruggs of Washington University earned two wins at No. 3 doubles to help lead the Bears to wins over 11th-ranked Trinity University and 19th-ranked Southwestern University. They won 8-5 against Trinity and their 8-3 victory over Southwestern gave the Bears a 2-1 lead entering singles.

Women’s Outdoor Track and Field

Emma Kelley  — Washington University  —  St. Louis, MO (Webster Groves)

Washington University junior Emma Kelley posted the top 800-meter time of the NCAA Division III season at the Bears’ Distance Carnival. Her time of 2:06.72 broke the previous stadium record by four seconds.

Yasmin Ruff  —  Washington University  —  Oak Park, IL (Oak Park-River Forest)

Washington University sophomore Yasmin Ruff won the pole vault at the Bears’ Distance Carnival on April 1. She cleared 3.75 meters to secure a ninth-place ranking in NCAA Division III this season.

Men’s Outdoor Track and Field

Jackson Price  —  Emory University  —  Denver, CO (Regis Jesuit)

Emory University sophomore Jackson Price ran the fourth-fastest time of the NCAA Division III season in the 200-meter dash at the Southern Wesleyan University GottaRun Invitational on Saturday. He placed second in the event in a time of 21.15 seconds, the second-fastest time in program history.

Matt Moore  —  Washington University  —  Waukee, IA (Dowling Catholic)

Washington University graduate student Matt Moore placed second in the long jump at the Bears’ Distance Carnival. His mark of 7.03 meters ranks 19th in NCAA Division III this season.

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
