Athletes of the Week for April 12, 2021

Baseball - Hitter

Michael Edelman  —  Emory University  —  New York, NY (Eleanor Roosevelt)

Senior outfielder Michael Edelman batted .429 (6-for-14) with two doubles, a home run, six runs batted in, two stolen bases, and a .786 slugging percentage in a 2-1 week for Emory University. He recorded at least one hit and one RBI in all three games, knocking in five runs in the Eagles’ doubleheader sweep of Sewanee: The University of the South on Sunday.

Baseball - Pitcher

Asher Kaplan  —  Brandeis University  —  Jamaica Plain, MA (Boston Latin)

Sophomore right-handed pitcher Asher Kaplan tossed his first career complete game shutout in a 2-0 Brandeis University win over Lasell University on Wednesday. He yielded three hits over seven innings, walked one, and struck out five to earn his first collegiate victory.

Women’s Golf

Mariana Chong  —  Emory University  —  Lima, Peru (Colegio Villa Caritas)

Emory University first-year golfer Mariana Chong tied for third place in the 50-player field at the Montgomery Country Club Women’s Intercollegiate in Montgomery, Alabama. She shot a 75 in the opening round and followed that with a program-record two-under par 70 over the final 18 holes. The Eagles placed fourth of 10 teams.

Men’s Golf

Declan Hickton  —  University of Rochester  —  Pittsburgh, PA (Sewickley Academy)

University of Rochester senior Declan Hickton earned medalist honors by nine strokes over the runner-up as the Yellowjackets dominated the St. John Fisher Midvale Invitational on Monday. He tied his career-best with a 69 in the first round and followed that with a 71 for a two-round total of 140. Rochester won the five-team event, finishing 50 shots ahead of the runner-up team.

Softball - Hitter

Hope Yashnik  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Fairlawn, OH (Copley)

Senior outfielder Hope Yashnik batted .692 (9-for-13) with seven runs scored, a home run, and four runs batted in as Case Western Reserve University won all four of its games during the week. She finished 4-for-7 with three runs scored in the Spartans’ sweep of Denison University and went 5-for-6 with four runs scored, a home run, and three RBI in a sweep of Bluffton University on Saturday.

Megan Weisenberg  —  Emory University  —  Seminole, FL (Osceola Fundamental)

Junior outfielder Megan Weisenberg finished 5-for-7 with three runs scored and five runs batted in to help lead Emory University to a sweep of Huntingdon College on Wednesday. She finished 2-for-3 in the opener and then recorded three hits, including a double and a three-run home run in the nightcap.

Softball - Pitcher

Sydney Goldman  —  Brandeis University  —  Sherman Oaks, CA (Notre Dame)

Junior Sydney Goldman tossed the second perfect game in Brandeis University history, striking out 13 of the 15 batters she faced in a 9-0 Judges’ win over Worcester State University. She tossed the program’s first no-hitter since 2011, throwing just 53 pitches, 43 of which were strikes.

Women’s Tennis

Cami Ruiz Vega  —  University of Rochester  —  Guaynabo, Puerto Rico (University Gardens)

University of Rochester junior Cami Ruiz Vega dropped just three games at No. 1 singles and teamed with Yaya Wang for an 8-0 win at No. 1 doubles in the Yellowjackets’ sweep of State University of New York at Geneseo. She earned a 6-1, 6-2 win in singles as Rochester improved to 3-0.

Men’s Tennis

Ethan Hillis  —  Washington University  —  Centennial, CO (Cherry Creek)

Washington University senior Ethan Hillis finished a combined 4-0 in singles and doubles in the Bears’ victories over NCAA Division II Lindenwood University and Principia College. He improved to 7-0 this season at No. 1 singles and also moved to 7-0 in doubles.

Women’s Outdoor Track and Field

Annika Urban  —  Emory University  —  Pittsburgh, PA (Fox Chapel)

Sophomore Annika Urban established an Emory University record in the 5,000-meter run at the Flames Invitational on Friday. She placed fifth, first among non-Division II competitors, with a time of 17:14.41, which ranks fifth in NCAA Division III this season.

Caira Watson-Haynes  —  Washington University  —  Chicago, IL (St. Ignatius College Prep)

Senior Caira Watson-Haynes swept the 100-meter hurdles and 100-meter dash as Washington University defeated Greenville University. Her time of 14.41 in the 100 hurdles ranks fifth in NCAA Division III this season. Watson-Haynes won the 100 in 12.78 seconds.

Rebekah Bondi  —  Emory University  —  Collegeville, PA (Perkiomen Valley)

Senior Rebekah Bondi captured the long jump and ran on the Emory University victorious 400-meter relay at the Berry College Field Day Invitational. She recorded a mark of 5.38 meters in the long jump, while the relay team took first place in 48.78 seconds. Bondi placed second in the 100-meter dash in 12.44 seconds and helped lead the Eagles to the team title.

Men’s Outdoor Track and Field

Jack Whetstone  —  Emory University  —  Glenview, IL (Glenbrook South)

Emory University senior Jack Whetstone recorded a personal-best time in the 5,000-meter run at the Flames Invitational on Friday. His mark of 14:38.99 placed him sixth in NCAA Division III in the event this season.

Jack Allan  —  Brandeis University  —  Wrentham, MA (King Phillip Regional)

Brandeis University graduate student Jack Allan turned in the seventh-best long jump in NCAA Division III this season in the Judges’ dual meet with Southern New Hampshire University. He leapt 7.08 meters to win the event and also bested the field in the 200-meter dash in 23.14 seconds.

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
