Athletes of the Week for April 19, 2021

Baseball - Hitter

Brian King  —  Brandeis University  —  Palos Verde, CA (Palos Verde)

Brandeis University third baseman Brian King hit safely and drove in runs in all five games in the Judges’ 3-2 week. The sophomore batted .625 (10-for-16) with six runs scored, four doubles, and eight runs batted in. King finished 5-for-6 with three doubles and four RBI in a doubleheader sweep of Lasell University on Wednesday. He drove in three runs in two losses to Framingham State University and batted 3-for-4 with three runs scored in the Judges’ 21-11 win over the Rams on Sunday.

Baseball - Pitcher

Reece Marley  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Clearwater Beach, FL (East Lake)

Case Western Reserve University freshman Reece Marley yielded just one unearned run and four hits over seven innings in the Spartans’ 8-2 victory over Denison University on Sunday. He did not walk a batter and struck out four to improve to 2-1 this season.

Ryan Loutos  —  Washington University  —  Barrington, IL (Barrington)

Washington University senior Ryan Loutos yielded one unearned run and three hits over 6.1 innings in the Bears’ 7-1 victory over Spalding University on Saturday. He walked three batters and struck out 12, his fourth game with at least 12 strikeouts this season, to earn his seventh win.

Women’s Golf

Caraline Oakley  —  Washington University  —  Southampton, NY (Southampton)

First-year golfer Caraline Oakley of Washington University finished third at Millikin University’s Take Back the Night Challenge. She shot 152 over two days, posting a season-best two-over par 74 in the second round.

Men’s Golf

Jason Folker  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Lake Forest, IL (Lake Forest)

Senior Jason Folker of Carnegie Mellon University claimed individual medalist honors at the Wynlakes Intercollegiate in Montgomery, Alabama. He shot a one-under par 71 in the opening round and carded six birdies in the final round when he tied his career-low round with a five-under par 67. Folker earned his first career individual title to help lead the Tartans to a runner-up finish in the 15-team field.

Softball - Hitter

Sarah Miller  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Lorain, OH (Marion L. Steele)

Case Western Reserve University senior shortstop Sarah Miller homered five times and batted .615 (8-for-13) with seven runs scored and nine runs batted in during a 2-1 week for the Spartans. She finished 5-for-8 with two home runs, four runs scored, and five RBI in a doubleheader sweep of Defiance College, and then hit three home runs and drove in all four Spartans’ runs in a 5-4 loss to NCAA Division I Kent State University. Miller added three stolen bases and posted a 1.769 slugging percentage.

Softball - Pitcher

Sydney Goldman  —  Brandeis University  —  Sherman Oaks, CA (Notre Dame)

Brandeis University junior Sydney Goldman posted a 3-0 record and a 0.35 earned run average to help lead the Judges to an 8-0 start to the season. In two victories over 24th-ranked Framingham State University, she threw back-to-back shutouts, yielding just three hits in 13 innings and striking out 25 batters. In three starts, Goldman allowed only one run and six hits, walking three, and striking out 36.

Women’s Tennis

Laurel Wanger  —  Washington University  —  Belleair, FL (Largo)

Senior Laurel Wanger posted a 4-0 combined record in singles and doubles in Washington University wins over Lindenwood University and North Central College. She teamed with Katherine Johnston for a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles against NCAA Division II Lindenwood and an 8-3 victory at second doubles against North Central. At No. 3 singles, Wanger won a third set super-breaker 10-7 against Lindenwood and recorded a straight-set victory against North Central.

Men’s Tennis

Benjamin van der Sman  —  Washington University  —  Woodbury, MN (East Ridge)

Senior Benjamin van der Sman posted a combined 4-0 record in singles and doubles in Washington University wins over University of Missouri-St. Louis and Principia College. He teamed with Daniel Li for a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles against NCAA Division II UMSL and an 8-1 victory at second doubles against Principia. At No. 3 singles, he dropped a total of nine games in four sets in a pair of straight-set wins.

Women’s Outdoor Track and Field

Rebekah Bondi  —  Emory University  —  Collegeville, PA (Perkiomen Valley)

Emory University senior Rebekah Bondi posted three season-best marks at the Georgia Tech Invitational. She was part of the second-fastest NCAA Division III 400-meter relay team this season that clocked in at 47.65 seconds. Bondi tied the sixth-fastest Division III time this year with her time of 12.09 seconds in the 100-meter dash and the 16th-ranked time in the long jump (5.56 meters). She added a personal-best time in the 200-meter dash in 25.50 seconds.

Isabel Saridakis  —  Emory University  —  Richfield, OH (Walsh Jesuit)

Emory University graduate student Isabel Saridakis captured the pole vault with a season-best height of 3.70 meters at the Georgia Tech Invitational on Saturday. Her mark ranks eighth in NCAA Division III this season.

Men’s Outdoor Track and Field

Harry Branch-Shaw  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  New York, NY (Brooklyn Technical)

Senior Harry Branch-Shaw of Carnegie Mellon University posted the top time in NCAA Division III this season in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Robert Morris University Invitational on Saturday. His time of 9:08.97 topped his previous best mark by more than eight seconds.

Bram Miller  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Colgate, WI (Kettle Moraine Lutheran)

Senior Bram Miller broke the 11-year-old Carnegie Mellon University record in the shot put at the Robert Morris University Invitational on Saturday. His toss of 17.11 meters broke James Hulley’s mark of 16.61 meters set in 2010. Miller also won the discus with a season-best mark of 48.55 meters. He currently ranks fourth in NCAA Division III in the shot put and 13th in the discus.

 

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
