Athletes of the Week for April 26, 2021

Baseball - Hitter

Luke Hall  —  Brandeis University  —  Georgetown, MA (Georgetown)

Senior catcher Luke Hall batted .500 (3-for-6) with six runs scored and four runs batted in during a 3-0 week for Brandeis University. He reached base safely eight times in 11 plate appearances, recording a .727 on-base percentage, and 1.333 slugging percentage. Hall hit a home run in the first game of the Judges’ doubleheader sweep of Lasell University on Saturday.

Baseball - Pitcher

Joey Bock  —  Emory University  —  St. Louis, MO (John Burroughs School)

Junior right-handed pitcher Joey Bock tossed four shutout innings in relief to earn the victory as Emory University ended its season with a 6-5 victory over Maryville University (TN). He allowed just two singles, struck out six, and retired the final eight batters he faced to improve to 4-0.

Softball - Hitter

Haley Nash  —  Brandeis University  —  Delmar, NY (Bethlehem Central)

Haley Nash of Brandeis University hit safely, scored, and drove in runs in all four contests as the Judges moved to 12-0, one of four undefeated teams left in NCAA Division III. The first-year player batted .500 (5-for-10) with six runs scored, three home runs, and five RBI. Nash homered in the second game of the Judges’ doubleheader sweep of Salem State University on Friday and in each of two wins over Johnson & Wales University on Saturday.

Softball - Pitcher

Sydney Goldman  —  Brandeis University  —  Sherman Oaks, CA (Notre Dame)

Junior Sydney Goldman of Brandeis won both her starts, allowing two runs and seven hits in 12 innings, posting a 1.17 earned run average. She tossed a one-hitter over five innings, striking out 11, in an 8-0 victory over Salem State University on Friday. Goldman yielded two runs and fanned six in the Judges’ 5-2 win over Johnson & Wales University on Saturday.

Women’s Tennis

Lauren Bertsch  —  Brandeis University  —  Middletown, RI (La Salle Academy)

Brandeis University senior Lauren Bertsch earned wins at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles in the Judges’ 9-0 win over crosstown rival NCAA Division II Bentley University. She dropped only four games in singles, recording a 6-3, 6-1 victory.

Men’s Tennis

Anupreeth Coramutla  —  Brandeis University  —  Monroe Township, NJ (Phillips Andover, MA)

Brandeis University senior Anupreeth Coramutla posted a 3-1 combined record in singles and doubles in Judges’ wins over NCAA Division I Merrimack College and regional rival Tufts University. He teamed with Colt Tegtmeier for a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles against Merrimack and an 8-5 victory to give the Judges a 2-1 lead over the Tufts. He earned the clinching point at No. 1 singles after dropping the first set in a 4-3 Judges’ win over Merrimack. His only loss came at first singles to the Jumbos’ top-ranked player in the region.

Women’s Outdoor Track and Field

Caira Watson-Haynes  —  Washington University  —  Chicago, IL (St. Ignatius College Prep)

Senior Caira Watson-Haynes captured the 100-meter hurdles (14.37 seconds) and the 200-meter dash (26.09 seconds) as Washington University won the Friday Nights Spikes Invitational at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. Her top 100 hurdles time of the season, 14.36 seconds, ranks fifth in NCAA Division III this season.

Rachel TerHaar  —  University of Chicago  —  Circle Pines, MN (Concordia Academy)

Junior Rachel TerHaar broke the University of Chicago pole vault record at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater’s Drake Alternative Meet. Her mark of 3.72 meters broke the previous program record of 3.65 meters set by Isabel Garon in 2019 and currently ranks sixth in NCAA Division III this season.

Men’s Outdoor Track and Field

Ryan Cutter  —  University of Chicago  —  El Sobrante, CA (Hercules)

University of Chicago senior Ryan Cutter broke the facility record in the 10,000-meter run at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater’s Drake Alternative Meet. His winning time of 29:43.92 broke the 2001 facility mark of 30:29.46 and currently ranks fourth in NCAA Division III this season.

Alexander Scott  —  University of Chicago  —  Plover, WI (Stevens Point Area)

University of Chicago graduate student Alexander Scott broke two program records at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater’s Drake Alternative Meet. He improved his own mark in the shot put with a toss of 17.19 meters, bettering his previous throw of 16.96 meters earlier this month. Scott then broke a nearly 30-year-old school record with a heave of 52.39 meters in his first discus event of the season, topping the previous record of 51.51 meters set by Neal Cawi in 1992.

 

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
