Athletes of the Week for September 6, 2022

Women’s Cross Country

Annika Urban  —  Emory University  —  Pittsburgh, PA (Fox Chapel)

Emory University senior Annika Urban finish first at the Jacksonville State University Foothills Invitational on Friday. She covered the four-kilometer course in 13:50.43, the only runner to break the 14-minute mark. Urban helped lead the Eagles to a runner-up team finish in the 21-team event featuring primarily NCAA Division I teams.

Men’s Cross Country

Colin McLaughlin  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Stamford, CT (Westhill)

Carnegie Mellon University sophomore Colin McLaughlin finished second at the Panther Open on Friday. He posted a time of 14:47.3 over the five-kilometer course at Schenley Park in Pittsburgh. The Tartans placed second competing against NCAA Division I University of Pittsburgh and NCAA Division II Davis and Elkins College.

Women’s Golf

Sydney Kuo  —  Washington University  —  South Plainfield, NJ (The Wardlaw Hartridge School)

Sophomore Sydney Kuo shot a three-under par 69 to finish first and lead Washington University to the team title at the Denison University Lynn Schweizer Invitational.

Women’s Soccer – Offense

Hannah Rittenhouse  —  University of Chicago  —  Geneva, IL (St. Francis)

Senior forward Hannah Rittenhouse netted a pair of goals as University of Chicago defeated host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges, 4-2. She scored the eventual game-winner at 64:28 and tallied the last goal of the contest in the 83rd minute.

Women’s Soccer – Defense

Emma Cohen  —  University of Rochester  —  Cincinnati, OH (Seven Hills)

Sophomore defender Emma Cohen paced the University of Rochester defense as the Yellowjackets opened the season 1-0-1. The Yellowjackets limited 25th-ranked State University of New York at Geneseo to three shots on goal in the Yellowjackets’ 2-0 season-opening victory and then held State University of New York at Cortland to five shots on goal in a 1-1 draw. 

Men’s Soccer – Offense

Tony Hypsher  —  University of Rochester  —  Kennesaw, GA (Marietta)

University of Rochester senior forward Tony Hypsher scored a pair of goals on two shots as the Yellowjackets opened the season with a 3-1 victory over 10th-ranked State University of New York at Cortland. He netted the game-winner in the 55th minute and scored again in the 61st minute.

Men’s Soccer – Defense

Santino Lupica-Tondo  —  University of Rochester —  Weston, FL (Cypress Bay)

University of Rochester junior goalkeeper Santino Lupica-Tondo made nine saves as the Yellowjackets began the 2022 season with a pair of victories. He stopped seven shots in a 3-1 victory over 10th-ranked State University of New York at Cortland and followed that with two saves in a 2-0  Yellowjackets’ shutout of University of Mount Union.

Women’s Tennis

Josephine Libby  —  University of Rochester  —  Rochester, NY (Pittsford Sutherland)

Sophomore Josephine Libby won the “A” Flight singles title and reached the finals of the doubles “A” flight at the William Smith College Mary Hosking Invitational. She dropped a total of 10 games in four eight-game pro sets to capture the singles title.

Volleyball

Haley Holz  —  NYU  —  Palatine, IL (Palatine)

NYU senior outside hitter Haley Holz earned all-tournament honors at the Pacific Coast Classic in Claremont, California. She hit .311 in four matches, averaging 3.62 kills per set in a 3-1 weekend for the seventh-ranked Violets. Holz averaged at least 3.0 kills per set in each match, including a weekend-best 4.3 kills per set against second-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges.

Lindsey Hirano  —  NYU  —  South Pasadena, CA (South Pasadena)

NYU sophomore libero Lindsey Hirano averaged 5.85 digs per set as the seventh-ranked Violets won three of four matches at the Pacific Coast Classic in Claremont, California. She totaled 28 digs in a four-set NYU win over Pomona-Pitzer Colleges and 23 in a sweep of Chapman University.

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
