Athletes of the Week for September 16, 2019

Women’s Cross Country

Jordan Hurlbut  —  University of Rochester —  Palmyra, NY (Palmyra Macedon)

Senior Jordan Hurlbut finished third in the 226-runner field at the University of Rochester Yellowjacket Invitational. She clocked a time of 22:29.6 over the six-kilometer course to help the Yellowjackets place third of 16 teams, second among NCAA Division III squads.

Men’s Cross Country

Liam Walsh  —  Carnegie Mellon University —  Gaithersburg, MD (Quince Orchard)

Senior Liam Walsh led Carnegie Mellon University to a perfect score at the Allegheny College Classic. He won the race with a time of 20:49 over the four-mile course.

Football – Offense

Alec Oshita  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Torrance, CA (Mira Costa)

Carnegie Mellon University junior wideout Alec Oshita caught seven passes for 148 yards and two touchdowns in the Tartans’ 31-6 victory at Geneva College on Saturday night. His first score came on the opening drive of the second half and his second touchdown closed the scoring on a 70-yard catch-and-run.

Nicholas D’Ambrose  —  University of Chicago  —  Addison, IL (Addison Trail)

University of Chicago sophomore running back Nicholas D’Ambrose rushed 14 times for 143 yards in the Maroons’ 27-23 loss at Simpson College. He averaged 10.2 yards per carry and scored two touchdowns, including a 66-yard run.

Football – Defense

Sam Brod  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Austin, TX (Vandegrift)

Carnegie Mellon University junior defensive end Sam Brod posted a career-best eight tackles with 1.5 sacks for 14 yards in loss as the Tartans opened the season 2-0 with a 31-6 win at Geneva College. The Tartan defense limited the Golden Tornadoes to 179 yards of total offense, their 15th consecutive victory when holding opponents to under 300 yards of total offense.

Football – Special Teams

Brandon Nguyen  —  Carnegie Mellon University —  Maitland, FL (Lake Highland Preparatory)

Sophomore Brandon Nguyen of Carnegie Mellon University matched his career-long with a 45-yard field goal to open the scoring for the Tartans in a 31-6 road win over Geneva College. He connected on all four of his extra point attempts, making him 7-for-7 this season.

Women’s Golf

Sam Haubenstock  —  Washington University  —  Weston, FL (Pine Crest School)

Senior Sam Haubenstock claimed medalist honors to lead ninth-ranked Washington University to the NCAA Division III Fall Preview title at the PGA National Palmer Course in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. She fired an even-par 72 on the final day, which included birdies at No. 13 and No. 14, en route to a three-round total of 221 (77-72-72).

Men’s Golf

Eric Yiu  —  Emory University  —  Shenzhen Guandong, China (Windermere Prep, FL)

Junior Eric Yiu tied for third place in a 90-player field to lead second-ranked Emory University to the team title at the NCAA Division III Fall Preview. He shot an even-par 216 (76-73-67) with six birdies over the final round, his second-lowest career round. The Eagles paced the 18-team field with a 10-over par 874, seven shots better than runner-up Illinois Wesleyan University.

Women’s Soccer – Offense

Taylor Cohen  —  Washington University  —  Pittsburgh, PA (Fox Chapel)

Senior forward Taylor Cohen scored two goals and added three assists as 10th-ranked Washington University recorded a pair of victories at the DePauw University Challenge Cup. She tallied once and assisted on two more scores in a 4-1 win over DePauw on Saturday before contributing another goal and assist in a 4-0 victory over Rhodes College in the championship game on Sunday. Cohen topped the 100-point mark in that match, becoming the sixth player in program history to reach that plateau.

Women’s Soccer – Defense

Victoria Richardson  —  Brandeis University  —  Tolland, CT (Tolland)

Senior goalkeeper Victoria Richardson earned a pair of wins, allowing just one goal, as Brandeis University posted wins over Clark University and Babson College. She made two saves to record her first collegiate shutout in a 2-0 road win over the Cougars. On Saturday, Richardson made three stops in a 3-1 home victory over Babson.

Men’s Soccer – Offense

Vicente Mateus  —  University of Chicago  —  Lisbon, Portugal (St. Julian’s School)

Sophomore midfielder Vicente Mateus tallied one goal and added two assists in a 1-0-1 week for University of Chicago. His goal with 13 seconds left in the first half cut a Hope College lead to 2-1 and then he assisted on Ben Brandt’s game-winner in overtime. Mateus assisted on the Maroons’ goal in a 1-1 draw with Rowan University Friday.

Men’s Soccer – Defense

Hugh Curran  —  University of Rochester —  McLean, VA (McLean)

Junior goalkeeper Hugh Curran recorded back-to-back shutouts as University of Rochester recorded consecutive 1-0 wins over Rochester Institute of Technology and Vassar College. He made a season-high five saves against RIT on Tuesday and followed that with four saves in an overtime triumph against Vassar on Saturday.

Women’s Tennis

Lindy Cornwall  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Poway, CA (Poway)

Carnegie Mellon University sophomore Lindy Cornwall reached the finals of the “B” flight at the Kenyon College Invitational. She earned singles wins over players from Case Western Reserve University and Kenyon College, but the final was not held due to her opponent’s injury. Cornwall also teamed with Bin Zheng to post wins over doubles tandems from CWRU and Kenyon.

Men’s Tennis

James Hopper  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Montgomery, NJ (Montgomery)

Case Western Reserve University freshman James Hopper began his collegiate career by teaming with junior Matthew Chen to win the top flight at the Villanova University Invitational, facing only NCAA Division I competition. He finished 4-0 in singles and 4-0 with Chen in doubles.

Volleyball

Leila King  —  Washington University  —  Atlanta, GA (Marist)

Senior middle hitter Leila King was named to the East to West Battle All-Tournament Team after leading Washington University to a 2-1 record over the weekend. The Bears dropped a four-setter to third-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges and defeated 11th-ranked Trinity University in five sets. In a 3-1 week for the Bears, King hit .305 with 2.71 kills and 1.0 blocks per set.

Kirby Knapp  —  Washington University  —  Menlo Park, CA (Menlo-Atherton)

Junior setter Kirby Knapp averaged 10.6 assists and 3.13 digs per set in a 3-1 week for Washington University, including two wins in the East to West Battle. She recorded 18 digs in a four-set loss to third-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges, while totaling 55 assists and 11 digs in a five-set Bears’ win over 11th-ranked Trinity University.

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
