Athletes of the Week for September 19, 2022

Women’s Cross Country

Annika Urban  —  Emory University  —  Pittsburgh, PA (Fox Chapel)

Senior Annika Urban of Emory University won her second consecutive meet of the season by capturing the individual title at the Mercer-MGA-Julius Johnson Invitational hosted by Mercer University in Macon, Georgia. Her time of 17:44 over five kilometers was more than a minute and a half faster than the nearest competitor and was the fastest five-kilometer time in program history since 2002.

Lucy Groothuis  —  University of Chicago  —  Holland, MI (West Ottawa)

Junior Lucy Groothuis of University of Chicago won her second consecutive meet of the season by topping the 240-runner field at the Wheaton College Gil Dodds Invitational. Her time of 22:01.4 over the six-kilometer course led the Maroons to the team title in the 18-team field, finishing 18 points ahead of runner-up and UAA rival Washington University.

Men’s Cross Country

Cullen Capuano  —  Washington University  —  Herndon, VA (Gonzaga School)

Junior Cullen Capuano of Washington University finished first in the 250-runner field at the Wheaton College Gil Dodds Invitational. His time of 25:10.5 helped lead the Bears to the team title in the 17-team field.

Women’s Golf

Irene Park  —  NYU  —  Rowland Heights, CA (Diamond Bar)

NYU first-year golfer Irene Park placed second in the 33-player field at the Violets’ home invitational. She shot a one-under par 71 on Sunday after posting a one-over par 72 on Saturday. NYU captured the team title by 54 strokes over runner-up Ithaca College.

Men’s Golf

Charles Hsieh  —  NYU  —  Atherton, CA (Menlo School)

NYU senior Charles Hsieh finished in a tie for third place at the Farmingdale State College George Cangero Invitational. He carded a two-under par 68 on Sunday after shooting a two-over par 72 on Saturday. NYU finished third in the 10-team field.

Women’s Soccer – Offense

Kylie Hall  —  Emory University  —  Phoenix, AZ (Veritas Preparatory Academy)

Senior Kylie Hall assisted on five goals to lead Emory University to wins over Sewanee: The University of the South and University of Lynchburg. She notched a career-best three assists in the Eagles’ 5-0 blanking of Sewanee on Friday before adding a pair of assists in a 3-1 victory over Lynchburg on Sunday.

Women’s Soccer – Defense

Grace Kuropatkin  —  University of Rochester  —  Marshfield, MA (Thayer Academy)

Sophomore goalkeeper Grace Kuropatkin earned a pair of shutouts as University of Rochester played to scoreless draws with St. John Fisher College and sixth-ranked William Smith College. She made one save against the Cardinals before stopping three shots against the Herons.

Men’s Soccer – Offense

Ethan Vertal  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Herndon, VA (Oakton)

Carnegie Mellon University junior forward Ethan Vertal scored two goals for the third time in a four-game span as the 18th-ranked Tartans blanked Washington & Jefferson College 3-0 on Tuesday. He entered the game in the 25th minute before scoring in the 33rd and 38th minutes.

Bryce Lexow  —  NYU  —  Rydal, PA (Abington Senior)

NYU sophomore forward Bryce Lexow scored a pair of goals on three shots in a 4-2 Violets’ victory over Rutgers University-Newark. He tied the game 1-1 with a goal in the 40th minute and scored again on a breakaway in the 75th minute.

Men’s Soccer – Defense

Richard Gillespie  —  University of Chicago —  Charlotte, NC (Charlotte Country Day School)

University of Chicago senior center back Richard Gillespie led the third-ranked Maroons to two more wins. He anchored the defense that yielded only one goal on a penalty kick in the contests, a 3-0 win over Hope College and a 2-1 victory over Luther College. Gillespie also scored a goal on a header against Hope.

Women’s Tennis

Iris Berman  —  Emory University  —  Los Angeles, CA (Palisades Charter)

First-year player Iris Berman reached the finals of her respective draws in both singles and doubles at the Elon University Fall Invitational featuring mostly NCAA Division I teams. She began her collegiate career with straight set wins over opponents from James Madison University and Virginia Tech before falling to a University of Richmond opponent. Berman teamed with classmate Alyssa Margolin to post victories over tandems from University of North Carolina-Greensboro and Richmond.

Men’s Tennis

Ajay Mahenthiran —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Fishers, IN (North Central)

Sophomore Ajay Mahenthiran earned all-tournament honors at the University of Toledo Rocket Invitational. He posted a 5-1 record in singles, posting victories over three NCAA Division I opponents as well as Denison University and UAA rival University of Chicago.

Volleyball

Haley Holz  —  NYU  —  Palatine, IL (Palatine)

NYU senior outside hitter Haley Holz averaged 3.83 kills, 0.42 blocks, and 1.33 digs per set as the Violets finished 2-1 at the first UAA round robin hosted by Washington University. She hit .337 with 23 kills and five blocks in a five-set thriller against the host Bears. Holz contributed 14 kills in a four-set Violets’ win over Carnegie Mellon University.

Diya Mishra  —  University of Chicago  —  Seattle, WA (The Overlake School)

University of Chicago first-year middle blocker Diya Mishra averaged 1.57 blocks per set as the Maroons finished 3-0 at the first UAA round robin. She also hit .517 with 2.43 kills per set in the three matches. Mishra totaled five kills and three blocks in the Maroons’ sweep of fourth-ranked Emory University.

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
