Athletes of the Week for September 23, 2019

Women’s Cross Country

Susie Martin  —  Emory University  —  Westport, CT (Staples)

Emory University junior Susie Martin placed first among non-Division I competitors, 18th of 182 runners overall, at the Rhodes College Invitational. She covered the six-kilometer course at Shelby Farms in 22:07.1 to help lead the Eagles to a sixth-place team finish, second amid 17 non-Division I schools, in the 21-team field.

Men’s Cross Country

Jack Whetstone  —  Emory University —  Glenview, IL (Glenbrook South)

Emory University junior Jack Whetstone placed first among non-Division I competitors in the 213-runner field at the Rhodes College Invitational. His time of 24:56.8 over the eight-kilometer course was 12th overall and helped lead the Eagles to a fourth-place finish in the 21-team field.

Football – Offense

Willie Richter  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Leander, TX (Cedar Park)

Senior wide receiver Willie Richter caught six passes for 97 yards and a late touchdown to lead Carnegie Mellon University to a 20-13 upset win over 12th-ranked Washington & Jefferson College. With 5:11 remaining in the game, Richter leapt for the ball, was able to control it in front of the end zone, and kept his feet inbounds for the game-winning 29-yard scoring strike.

Football – Defense

Quinn Gaughan  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Elmhurst, IL (York Community)

Senior outside linebacker Quinn Gaughan posted a career-best 17 tackles as Carnegie Mellon University secured a 20-13 victory over visiting 12th-ranked Washington & Jefferson College. He registered nine solo hits, 2.5 tackles for loss, including 1.5 sacks, recovered a fumble, and recorded his first career interception.

Football – Special Teams

Brandon Nguyen  —  Carnegie Mellon University —  Maitland, FL (Lake Highland Preparatory)

Sophomore Brandon Nguyen connected on a 46-yard field goal with one second remaining in the first half, his second field goal of the game, in a 20-13 Carnegie Mellon University win over 12th-ranked Washington & Jefferson College. He hit a 41-yard field goal early in the game and converted both his extra point attempts.

Anthony Brown  —  Washington University —  St. Louis, MO (Webster Groves)

Sophomore defensive lineman Anthony Brown returned a blocked field goal for a touchdown for 24th-ranked Washington University in a 46-13 loss to fifth-ranked North Central College. He sprinted 71 yards for the score on the final play of the first quarter to even the score at 13.

Women’s Golf

Jessica Wu  —  NYU  —  Langley, British Columbia (Mountain Secondary School)

NYU junior Jessica Wu placed sixth of 90 golfers at the Mount Holyoke College Invitational. She shot rounds of 75 and 77 to lead the Violets to a runner-up finish in the 17-team field.

Annie Mascot  —  Washington University  —  Agoura Hills, CA (Agoura)

Washington University first-year player Annie Mascot fired a 73 in the Bears’ dual match win over NCAA Division II Lindenwood University. She placed second in the 13-player match.

Men’s Golf

Joseph Burlison  —  NYU  —  Salinas, CA (Palma)

NYU sophomore Joseph Burlison shot an even-par 142 to finish third of 129 golfers at the Williams College Fall Invitational. He posted scores of 70 and 72 on the par-71 course and guided the Violets to a fourth-place finish in the 25-team field.

Women’s Soccer – Offense

Madison Drenowatz  —  University of Rochester  —  Grapevine, TX (Carroll)

University of Rochester first-year forward Madison Drenowatz scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season as the Yellowjackets upset top-ranked William Smith College, 1-0, on Saturday. The Yellowjackets were limited to three shots on goal, while defeating the Herons for the second consecutive season, accomplishing that feat for the first time since 2005-06.

Women’s Soccer – Defense

Gabbie Cesarone  —  Washington University  —  St. Charles, IL (St. Charles North)

Washington University sophomore back Gabbie Cesarone anchored the Bears’ back line that limited two opponents to a combined six shots. The Bears defeated fourth-ranked Wheaton College (IL), 2-1 in overtime, yielding just four shots. The Thunder entered the contest averaging 21.7 shots per game. Cesarone led the defensive effort that held Fontbonne University to two shots in a 2-0 Bears’ victory.

Men’s Soccer – Offense

Madison Conduah  —  Emory University  —  Oregon, WI (Oregon)

Emory University freshman forward Madison Conduah recorded two goals and an assist as the Eagles defeated University of Mary Hardin-Baylor and 24th-ranked University of Texas at Dallas. He tallied his first two collegiate goals in a 2-1 overtime upset win over UTD, netting the game-winner with two seconds remaining in the first extra period.

Men’s Soccer – Defense

Aaron Katsimpalis  —  University of Chicago  —  Harrison Township, MI (L’Anse Creuse)

University of Chicago junior goalkeeper Aaron Katsimpalis made a combined 16 saves in a 1-0-1 week for the Maroons. He stopped nine shots in a 1-1 draw with Wheaton College (IL) and added seven stops in a 2-1 road win over ninth-ranked Loras College.

Mouhammed Thiam  —  University of Rochester  —  Andover, MA (Andover)

University of Rochester senior defender Mouthammed Thiam paced the defense that shut out two opponents, limiting them to a combined five shots on goal, in two 1-0 wins. He also scored his first career goal, redirecting a shot for the game-winner with 1:20 left in the second overtime, in a victory over State University of New York Geneseo.

Women’s Tennis

Anna Maria Buraya  — NYU  —  Toronto, Canada (Bayview Glenn School)
Anastasiia Balyk  — NYU  —  Odessa, Ukraine (Boca Prep International School, FL)

Junior Anna Maria Buraya and first-year teammate Anastasiia Balyk captured the doubles title at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Region Championships at Geneva, New York. They posted an 8-2 semifinal win over their Vassar College opponents before earning a 2-6, 6-0, 6-2 comeback win over opponents from Skidmore College in the championship final.

Karina Jensrud  — NYU  —  Oslo, Norway (Laurel Springs School, CA)

First-year player Karina Jensrud of NYU won the singles title at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Region Championships at Geneva, New York. She upended teammate Anna Maria Buraya in straight sets in the semifinals before earning a 4-6, 7-5, 6-0 comeback victory over her Vassar College opponent in the championship final.

Claudia Ng  — University of Chicago  —  Hong Kong (Australian International School)
Perene Wang  — University of Chicago  —  New York, NY (Bronx High School of Science)

The first-year doubles team of Claudia Ng and Perene Wang captured the doubles title at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Region Championships at Kalamazoo, Michigan. The fifth-seeded duo defeated the second seed from Hope College, 8-3, in the semifinals before taking a 6-4, 6-3 decision over the third-seeded tandem from Kenyon College in the championship match.

Lauren Park  — University of Chicago  —  La Cañada, CA (Polytechnic)

Sophomore Lauren Park of University of Chicago won the singles title at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Region Championships. The ninth seed defeated teammate Catherine Xu in three sets in the semifinal before defeating another teammate, Nicole Semenov, 6-1, 6-0, in the final.

Men’s Tennis

Antonio Mora  —  Emory University  —  Miami, FL (Ransom Everglades)

Emory University sophomore Antonio Mora earned singles and doubles titles at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) South Region Championships. He won six consecutive matches to take the singles title, including a straight-set victory over his Sewanee: The University of the South opponent in the semifinals and Emory classmate Andrew Esses in the final. Mora teamed with junior Will Wanner to capture the doubles final by a score of 6-4, 4-6, 10-8 as the duo battled back from a 2-6 deficit in the deciding pro set.

Will Wanner  —  Emory University  —  Miami, FL (Ransom Everglades)

Emory University junior Will Wanner teamed with sophomore Antonio Mora to win the doubles titles at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) South Region Championships. They defeated teammates Hassan Kewani and Mark Sverdlov in the quarterfinals and topped their opponents from North Carolina Wesleyan University in the semifinals. Wanner and Mora captured the doubles final by a score of 6-4, 4-6, 10-8 as the duo battled back from a 2-6 deficit in the deciding pro set.

Volleyball

Anne Marie Stifter  —  University of Chicago  —  Oak Lawn, IL (Marist)

University of Chicago senior outside hitter Anne Marie Stifter hit .292, and averaged 3.76 kills and 3.70 digs per set as the Maroons finished 3-0 in the first UAA round robin and posted a midweek win over top-ranked Calvin College. She finished with 11 kills and 22 digs in a four-set win over Calvin on Wednesday. Stifter recorded double-digit kills in all four matches, including 12 in a sweep of rival Washington University.

Emma Griffith  —  University of Chicago  —  New York, NY (Calhoun)

University of Chicago junior setter Emma Griffith averaged 12.23 assists and 2.61 digs per set as the Maroons finished 3-0 in the first UAA round robin and posted a midweek win over top-ranked Calvin College. She finished with 54 assists and 14 digs in a four-set win over Calvin on Wednesday. Griffith totaled at least 30 assists in all four victories, including 38 in a sweep of NYU.

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
