Athletes of the Week for September 30, 2019

Women’s Cross Country

Jordan Hurlbut  —  University of Rochester  —  Palmyra, NY (Palmyra-Macedon)

Senior Jordan Hurlbut of University of Rochester placed seventh among 251 runners, fifth among NCAA Division III runners, at the State University of New York-Geneseo Mike Woods Invitational on Saturday. She ran a six-kilometer time of 22:42.1 to help lead the Yellowjackets to a third-place finish.

Men’s Cross Country

Trey Razanauskas  —  Case Western Reserve University —  Zelienople, PA (Seneca Valley)

Junior Trey Razanauskas placed 15th of 301 runners, sixth among NCAA Division III runners, at the All-Ohio Championships in Cedarville, Ohio. In his first race of the season, he completed the eight-kilometer course in 26:00.4 to lead the Spartans to a runner-up finish among Division III opponents.

Football – Offense

Kris Hughes  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Springboro, OH (Springboro)

Carnegie Mellon sophomore wide receiver Kris Hughes tied a program single-game record with four touchdown receptions in the Tartans’ 49-14 win at St. Vincent College. He finished with five catches for a career-high 120 yards.

Mike Martinson  — University of Chicago  —  Brea, CA (Brea-Olinda)

University of Chicago junior Mike Martinson ran 13 times for 121 yards, averaging 9.3 yards per carry, in the Maroons’ 27-10 victory over Lake Forest College. He rushed for one touchdown, caught a six-yard pass, and returned two punts for 28 yards.

Football – Defense

Cameron Brown  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Westlake, OH (Westlake)

Case Western Reserve University defensive lineman Cameron Brown registered 3.5 sacks and 5.5 tackles for loss in the Spartans’ 37-6 win over Thiel College on Saturday. He finished with eight tackles total, while forcing and recovering a fumble.

Football – Special Teams

Brandon Nguyen  —  Carnegie Mellon University —  Maitland, FL (Lake Highland Preparatory)

Carnegie Mellon University sophomore Brandon Nguyen made a pair of 29-yard field goals in the Tartans’ 49-14 victory at St. Vincent College. He added four extra points.

Women’s Golf

Sophia Bian  —  NYU  —  Vancouver, Canada (St. John’s School)

First-year golfer Sophia Bian placed fifth in the 66-player field at the Middlebury College George Phinney Jr. Golf Classic. She shot rounds of 77 and 81 for the Violets, who placed fourth.

Women’s Soccer – Offense

Anika Washburn  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Brookfield, WI (Brookfield Academy)

Sophomore midfielder Anika Washburn scored three goals in a pair of 3-1 Case Western Reserve University victories. She scored the game-winning goal against Kenyon College on Wednesday and tallied twice at John Carroll University on Sunday.

Women’s Soccer – Defense

Miranda Malone  —  University of Chicago  —  Cary, IL (Cary-Grove)

Junior goalkeeper Miranda Malone made six saves in a 1-0-1 week for University of Chicago. She made five saves in the Maroons’ 1-1 draw with eighth-ranked Wheaton College (IL) and followed that with one save in a 4-0 shutout at Calvin College.

Men’s Soccer – Offense

Sergio Monton  —  NYU  —  Madrid, Spain (Fundación Fomento)

Senior midfielder Sergio Monton assisted on both NYU goals in a 2-1 win over local rival Stevens Institute of Technology. He assisted on the overtime winner scored by Talal Said.

Aidan Miller  —  University of Rochester  —  Pearl River, NY (Pearl River)

Senior forward Aidan Miller scored twice, including the game-winning goal, as University of Rochester edged Alvernia University, 3-2, on Saturday. He recorded an assist in a 3-0 Yellowjackets’ victory over St. John Fisher College on Tuesday.

Men’s Soccer – Defense

Greg Irwin  —  Brandeis University  —  Passaic, NJ (Seton Hall Prep)

Senior goalkeeper Greg Irwin recorded back-to-back shutouts in a 1-0-1 week for Brandeis University. He stopped six shots in a scoreless draw against Wheaton College (MA) and then made one save in a 3-0 Judges’ victory over Mitchell College.

Women’s Tennis

Alexa Goetz  — Emory University  —  Greenlawn, NY (Harborfields)
Christina Watson  — Emory University  —  Houston, TX (St. Agnes Academy)

First-year player Alexa Goetz and sophomore Christina Watson of Emory University captured the doubles title at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) South Region Championships. After being pushed to a tiebreaker in the opening round, the duo dropped only five games total the rest of the tournament, including one in the championship match. Goetz also earned the singles title with a three-set win over teammate Emma Cartledge in the final.

Danna Taylor  — Carnegie Mellon University  —  Orlando, FL (Circle Christian School)
Courtney Ollis  — Carnegie Mellon University  —  Suffern, NY (Suffern)

Sophomore Danna Taylor and senior Courtney Ollis captured the doubles title at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Southeast Region Championships. Taylor also won her second consecutive ITA regional singles title.

Men’s Tennis

David Aizenberg  —  Brandeis University  —  Highland Park, IL (Highland Park)

Senior David Aizenberg reached the singles and doubles quarterfinals at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) New England Region Championships. He defeated opponents from Babson College, Colby College, and Middlebury College in singles. Aizenberg teamed with junior Anupreeth Coramutla to earn a pair of wins in doubles.

Volleyball

Anne Marie Stifter  —  University of Chicago  —  Oak Lawn, IL (Marist)

Senior outside hitter Anne Marie Stifter totaled 19 kills and 26 digs as third-ranked University of Chicago defeated Aurora University, the team who eliminated the Maroons from the NCAA Division III tournament last season. She averaged 4.75 kills, 6.50 digs, and 1.0 block per set in the four-set win.

Emma Griffith  —  University of Chicago  —  New York, NY (Calhoun)

Junior setter Emma Griffith averaged 12.50 assists and 2.50 digs per set as third-ranked University of Chicago defeated Aurora University, the team who eliminated the Maroons from the NCAA Division III tournament last season. She finished the four-set match with 50 assists and 10 digs.

Women’s Swimming and Diving

Sandra Meszaros  —  Washington University  —  Pompano Beach, FL (Pine Crest School)

Sandra Meszaros of Washington University began her collegiate career by winning two individual events as the Bears competed against NCAA Division I St. Louis University. She captured the 200-yard freestyle (1:56.04) and 100-yard butterfly (57.77 seconds), and swam the third leg of the Bears’ winning 200-yard medley relay team that won in a time of 1:48.58.

Rosie Finglass  —  Washington University  —  Decatur, GA (The Galloway School)

Rosie Finglass of Washington University won the one-meter dive in her first collegiate event as the Bears competed against NCAA Division I St. Louis University. She won the event with a score of 206.15 and placed second on the three-meter board.

Men’s Swimming and Diving

Barclay Dale  —  Washington University  —  St. Louis, MO (St. Louis University HS)

Sophomore Barclay Dale won two individual events and swam on a winning relay to lead Washington University to a victory over NCAA Division I St. Louis University. He finished first in the 50-yard freestyle (21.44 seconds) and the 100-yard backstroke (52.84 seconds), and also swam on the 200-yard medley relay that won in 1:34.24.

Matthew Grottkau  —  Washington University  —  Reading, MA (Phillips Academy Andover)

Junior Matthew Grottkau posted scores of 213.5 points and 193.85 points on the one- and three-meter dives, respectively, as Washington University began the season with a victory over St. Louis University.

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
