Athletes of the Week for October 3, 2022
Women’s Cross Country
Annika Urban — Emory University — Pittsburgh, PA (Fox Chapel)
Emory University senior Annika Urban shattered the previous six-kilometer program record in winning the Lehigh University Paul Short Invitational Brown Race on Friday. She raced to a first place finish in 20:22.9 in the field of 383 runners, nearly 25 seconds ahead of the runner-up. Urban won her third consecutive meet to open the season, bettering the Emory record by 37 seconds.
Men’s Cross Country
Colin McLaughlin — Carnegie Mellon University — Stamford, CT (Westhill)
Carnegie Mellon University sophomore Colin McLaughlin placed eighth in the 403-runner field at the Lehigh University Paul Short Invitational on Friday. He covered the eight-kilometer Brown Race course in 24:12.0 to lead the Tartans to the title in the 45-team field.
Women’s Golf
Tiya Chowdary — NYU — Belle Mead, NJ (Montgomery)
First-year golfer Tiya Chowdary of NYU placed second in the 74-player field at the Middlebury College George Phinney Classic. She shot rounds of 79 and 81 to finish two strokes behind the medalist and help lead the Violets to a runner-up finish in the 12-team competition.
Men’s Golf
Michael Burry — Emory University — Saratoga, CA (Saratoga)
Sophomore Michael Burry of Emory University finished a team-best eighth at the Gate City Invitational in Greensboro, North Carolina. He registered a three-round score of 213 (69-72-72) to help the Eagles secure a third-place finish in their season-opening tournament.
Women’s Soccer – Offense
Alex Adams — Carnegie Mellon University — Pittsburgh, PA (North Allegheny)
Carnegie Mellon University senior Alex Adams scored twice as the Tartans came back from a 2-0 deficit to tie NYU 2-2 in the opening UAA contest. She cut the lead to 2-1 in the first half and netted the equalizer in the second half.
Women’s Soccer – Defense
Megan Pung — University of Rochester — Loveland, OH (Mount Notre Dame)
University of Rochester junior defender Megan Pung helped the Yellowjackets post back-to-back shutouts and added her first goal of the season in a 5-0 win over Houghton College. The defense limited the Highlanders to two shots and held University of Chicago to three shots on goal as the UAA squads played to a scoreless draw.
Men’s Soccer – Offense
Ryan Yetishefsky — University of Chicago — Edmond, OK (Deer Creek)
University of Chicago junior forward Ryan Yetishefsky scored all three goals as the top-ranked Maroons shut out fifth-ranked North Park University 3-0 on Wednesday. The game was scoreless at the half before he recorded his hat trick in the second half.
Men’s Soccer – Defense
Luca Mancuso — NYU — Miami, FL (Montverde Academy)
NYU senior goalkeeper Luca Mancuso made six saves to record the shutout as the Violets opened UAA play with a 2-0 win at eighth-ranked Carnegie Mellon University. He made several challenging stops in rainy conditions.
Richard Gillespie — University of Chicago — Charlotte, NC (Charlotte Country Day School)
University of Chicago senior center back Richard Gillespie led the Maroons to a pair of shutouts against nationally ranked opponents. In wins over fifth-ranked North Park University and 22nd-ranked University of Rochester, the Maroons surrendered a combined two shots on goal.
Volleyball
Michaela Bach — Washington University — St. Louis, MO (John Burroughs)
Washington University graduate student Michaela Bach hit .338 and averaged 4.14 kills per set as the fifth-ranked Bears split two matches at the second UAA round robin hosted by Carnegie Mellon University. She recorded 20 kills and hit .333 in a four-set loss to sixth-ranked Emory University after hitting .346 with nine kills and no errors in a sweep of University of Rochester.
Stella Yan — Carnegie Mellon University — Coppell, TX (Coppell)
Carnegie Mellon University senior setter Stella Yan totaled 55 assists, 15 digs, seven kills, and six blocks to lead the host Tartans to a 2-0 mark at the second UAA round robin. She recorded 34 assists, 10 digs, six kills, and five blocks in a thrilling five-set victory over sixth-ranked Emory University.
Women’s Swimming and Diving
Taylor Leone — Emory University — Hilliard, OH (Hilliard Darby)
Graduate student Taylor Leone won the 50-yard freestyle as Emory University opened its season against NCAA Division I Georgia Tech. She posted a winning time of 24.09 seconds and was also part of two top relays for the Eagles in the 200-yard medley relay (third in 1:47.74) and the 400-yard freestyle relay (second in 3:35.30).
Tess Klugherz — Emory University — Gwynned, PA (Wissahickon)
Junior diver Tess Klugherz recorded third- and fourth-place finishes as Emory University opened its season against NCAA Division I Georgia Tech. She posted scores of 252.38 points on the three-meter board and 226.35 in the one-meter event.
Men’s Swimming and Diving
Nicholas Goudie — Emory University — Atlanta, GA (Atlanta International School)
Junior Nicholas Goudie earned a pair of victories as Emory University opened its season against NCAA Division I Georgia Tech. He swept the sprint freestyles with times of 20.99 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle and 46.03 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle. Goudie led the Eagles to a runner-up finish in the 200-yard medley relay in 1:32.09.
Lucas Bumgarner — Emory University — Pittsburgh, PA (Mt. Lebanon)
Senior diver Lucas Bumgarner earned two runner-up finishes as Emory University opened its season against NCAA Division I Georgia Tech. He posted a score of 362.40 points on the one-meter board and 390.23 in the three-meter event.
Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
