Athletes of the Week for October 10, 2022

Men’s Golf

Henry Scavone  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Birmingham, MI (Birmingham Seaholm)

Carnegie Mellon University graduate student Henry Scavone earned fourth place in a field of 90 golfers at the NCAA Division III Fall Preview held at the Keene Trace Golf Club in Nicholasville, Kentucky. He fired a three-over par 219 (72-73-74) for the 54-hole event to lead the Tartans to a tie for second place.

Women’s Soccer – Offense

Kylie Hall  —  Emory University  —  Phoenix, AZ (Veritas Preparatory Academy)

Senior forward Kylie Hall scored a goal and assisted on another as Emory University blanked host University of Chicago, 3-0, in UAA play. She also assisted on two scores in a 7-0 Eagles’ rout of Oglethorpe University. Hall has established program records for assists in a season (13) and consecutive matches with an assist (seven), and leads NCAA Division III in assists per game.

Women’s Soccer – Defense

Maggie Storti  — Case Western Reserve University  —  Cranberry Township, PA (Oakland Catholic)

Junior goalkeeper Maggie Storti recorded her fourth shutout of the season in a 3-0 win for seventh-ranked Case Western Reserve University at NYU. She made three saves and faced seven shots as the Spartans moved to 10-0-0.

Men’s Soccer – Offense

Matt Vatne  — Case Western Reserve University  —  Sterling Heights, MI (Adlai Stevenson)

Senior midfielder Matt Vatne scored the tying goal and assisted on the game-winner as Case Western Reserve University came back to defeat host NYU, 2-1. He scored on a penalty kick early in the second half to even the score. In the 89th minute, Vatne dribbled up the far side of the field into the 18-yard box, beat two defenders, and earned the assist on the deciding goal from sophomore forward Kysen Kroeger.

Men’s Soccer – Defense

Matt Martin  —  Washington University —  Cupertino, CA (Bellarmine College Prep)

Sophomore goalkeeper Matt Martin recorded his fourth and fifth shutouts of the season, making a combined 11 saves in a 1-0-1 week for Washington University. He stopped five shots in a 3-0 Bears’ win over Millikin University and made six saves in a scoreless draw with UAA rival University of Rochester.

Women’s Tennis

Sylwia Mikos  —  University of Chicago  —  Willowbrook, IL (Hinsdale South)
Shianna Guo  —  University of Chicago  —  Mount Pleasant, SC (Wando)

University of Chicago sophomores Sylwia Mikos and Shianna Guo defended their ITA Central Regional Championship doubles title with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over teammates Perene Wang and Claudia Ng. Mikos also earned the singles title with a 6-2, 6-1 win over teammate Miranda Yuan.

Men’s Tennis

Nolan Shah  —  Emory University  —  Plainsboro, NJ (West Windsor-Plainsboro North)
John Lasanajak  —  Emory University  —  Lawrenceville, GA (Gwinnett Online Campus)

Emory University junior Nolan Shah and freshman John Lasanajak captured the ITA South Regional Championship doubles title. They defeated teammates Ryan Glanville and Charlie James in the final on Monday when Glanville retired due to injury. Shah posted four consecutive straight-set wins in singles before defeating his Sewanee: The University of the South opponent, 5-7, 6-0, 6-2 in the championship match.

Volleyball

Haley Holz  —  NYU  —  Palatine, IL (Palatine)

Senior outside hitter Haley Holz averaged 3.47 kills per set with a .260 hitting percentage as NYU finished 3-1 in a weekend in which the Violets faced three nationally ranked opponents. She hit .360 with 20 kills and five blocks in a four-set victory over ninth-ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, and hit .304 with 16 kills in a five-set win over 19th-ranked Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Lindsey Hirano  —  NYU  —  South Pasadena, CA (South Pasadena)

Sophomore libero Lindsey Hirano averaged 6.0 digs and 1.23 assists per set as NYU finished 3-1 in a weekend in which the Violets faced three nationally ranked opponents. She posted a weekend-best 32 digs in a four-set victory over ninth-ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, while totaling 25 digs and 10 assists in a four-set win over Swarthmore College.

Women’s Swimming and Diving

Emily Noll  —  Emory University  —  Chevy Chase, MD (Maret)

Emory University first-year swimmer Emily Noll won the 200-yard backstroke in a dual match with NCAA Division II powerhouse Queens University of Charlotte on Saturday. She finished first in the event in a time of 2:04.10. Noll placed second in the 100-yard backstroke (57.73 seconds) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:10.59).

Men’s Swimming and Diving

Liyang Sun  —  Emory University  —  Irvine, CA (Arnold O. Beckham)

Emory University sophomore Liyang Sun won the 100-yard breaststroke in a dual match with NCAA Division II powerhouse Queens University of Charlotte on Saturday. He finished first in the event in 56.43 seconds. Sun added a runner-up finish in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:04.49) and swam on the Eagles’ second-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay (3:23.46).

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
