Athletes of the Week for November 4, 2019

Women’s Cross Country

Paige Lawler  —  Washington University  —  Lexington, MA (Lexington)

Senior Paige Lawler earned her second consecutive UAA Women’s Cross Country Championship individual title, leading Washington University to its sixth consecutive team title. She covered the six-kilometer course at Schenley Park in Pittsburgh in a time of 21:49.76.

Men’s Cross Country

Ryan Cutter  —  University of Chicago  —  El Sobrante, CA (Hercules)

Junior Ryan Cutter became the first University of Chicago runner since 2003 to earn individual medalist honors at the UAA Men’s Cross Country Championship. He posted an eight-kilometer time of 24:50.23 over Pittsburgh’s Schenley Park course, edging the runner-up by .31 seconds.

Football – Offense

Colt Morgan  — Case Western Reserve University  —  Wooster, OH (Wooster)

Case Western Reserve University junior wide receiver Colt Morgan caught eight passes for 102 yards and two touchdowns in the Spartans’ 35-14 win over visiting Bethany College. He moved into a tie for the program record with his 31 career touchdown receptions.

Football – Defense

Jackson Ross  — University of Chicago  —  Norman, OK (Heritage Hall)

University of Chicago junior defensive lineman Jackson Ross made a career-high 18 tackles in the Maroons’ 21-20 overtime loss to Monmouth College (IL). He also blocked a pair of field goal attempts.

Football – Special Teams

Will Hurley  —  Washington University —  Burlington, MA (Buckingham Browne & Nichols School)

Washington University junior Will Hurley returned a punt 28 yards for a touchdown in the Bears’ 35-14 victory over Augustana College. He added a tackle on a kickoff return and was the holder on a fake field goal, which resulted in a Bears’ first down and led to their fourth touchdown.

Men’s Golf

Logan Ryan  —  Emory University  —  Fort Wayne, IN (Bishop Dwenger)

Sophomore Logan Ryan of Emory University earned medalist honors at the O’Briant-Jensen Memorial in Greensboro, North Carolina. He shot a five-under par 137, which tied the program’s 36-hole record, and broke the single-round mark with his second-round score of 65. Ryan birdied seven holes in his record-setting round. The Eagles tied UAA rival Carnegie Mellon University for first place in the team standings with the Tartans earning the tiebreaker.

Women’s Soccer – Offense

Anika Washburn  — Case Western Reserve University  —  Brookfield, WI (Brookfield Academy)

Sophomore midfielder Anika Washburn scored all three Case Western Reserve University goals as the Spartans split two road matches against nationally ranked UAA opponents. She tallied in the eighth and 83rd minutes in the Spartans’ 2-0 victory at 12th-ranked University of Chicago, and scored in the 52nd minute to break a scoreless tie in a 2-1 overtime loss at third-ranked Washington University.

Taylor Cohen  — Washington University  —  Pittsburgh, PA (Fox Chapel)

Senior forward Taylor Cohen had a hand in all three Washington University goals as the Bears clinched the outright UAA title with home wins over Carnegie Mellon University and Case Western Reserve University. She scored in the 12th minute for the only goal in a 1-0 win over the 23rd-ranked Tartans. Cohen assisted on the game-tying goal late in the second half and the winner in double overtime in a 2-1 victory over the Spartans.

Women’s Soccer – Defense

Haley Pratt  —  Emory University  —  Charlotte, NC (Ardrey Kell)

Senior goalkeeper Haley Pratt posted back-to-back shutouts as Emory University blanked visiting Brandeis University and NYU. She made eight saves in a 4-0 victory over the Judges on Friday and added two stops in a 3-0 Sunday win over the Violets.

Men’s Soccer – Offense

Zach Lawlor  — University of Rochester  —  Webster, NY (Aquinas)

Senior midfielder Zach Lawlor scored three goals and added an assist in University of Rochester home wins over NYU and Brandeis University. He posted his first career multi-goal game with two goals and contributed an assist as the Yellowjackets scored four times in the second half to defeat the Violets, 5-1. Lawlor netted the game-winner 40 seconds after Josh Cooley’s tying goal in the second half in a 2-1 victory over the Judges.

Men’s Soccer – Defense

Max Carlson  — Emory University  —  Lilburn, GA (Parkview)

Sophomore goalkeeper Max Carlson made a combined 10 saves in a 1-0-1 weekend for Emory University. He made six saves in a 2-1 Eagles’ win over Brandeis University on Friday and recorded four stops in a scoreless draw with NYU on Sunday.

Connor Mathes  — Washington University  —  Overland Park, KS (Blue Valley Northwest)

Senior goalkeeper Connor Mathes posted a 2-0 record and a 0.50 goals against average as Washington University topped two UAA opponents. He made six saves in the Bears’ 3-1 victory over Carnegie Mellon University on Friday and then registered a shutout with three saves in a 2-0 blanking of Case Western Reserve University. 

Women’s Fencing

Jessica Morales  — Brandeis University  —  Wilmington, MA (Wilmington)

Brandeis University first-year fencer Jessica Morales won gold in the sabre competition on Saturday at the New England Intercollegiate Fencing Conference (NEIFC) Fall Invitational. She emerged from pool play as the third seed after finishing 5-0 with indicators of +23. Morales defeated an opponent from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the quarterfinals and the second seed from Boston College in the semifinals. She defeated classmate Maggie Shealy, 15-11, in the gold medal match.

Men’s Fencing

Josh Shuster  — Brandeis University  —  Brooklyn, NY (Staten Island Technical)

Brandeis University freshman Josh Shuster won gold in the epee at the New England Intercollegiate Fencing Conference (NEIFC) Fall Invitational.  He finished 4-1 in pool play, making him the 22nd seed in direct elimination. Shuster earned a 15-13 win over his Sacred Heart University opponent in the semifinals after posting three wins and a default victory. He topped his opponent from Boston College, 15-13, in the gold medal match.

Owen McKenna  — NYU  —  New Hope, PA (Germantown Academy)

NYU freshman Owen McKenna captured the foil competition in his first collegiate competition at the Temple University Open on Sunday. He went undefeated in pool play to earn the first seed in direct elimination. McKenna earned the title with a thrilling 15-14 victory over his University of North Carolina opponent in the final.

Volleyball

Tara Martin  —  Emory University  —  Jacksonville Beach, FL (Episcopal School of Jacksonville)

Sophomore outside hitter Tara Martin was named Most Valuable Player of the Emory University National Invitational, leading the Eagles to a 3-0 record. She averaged 3.50 kills with a team-best .409 hitting percentage. She hit .500 with nine kills in a three-set win over ninth-ranked Berry College and finished with 17 kills as the Eagles battled back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Wittenberg University.

Kayla Yew  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  San Francisco, CA (Sacred Heart Cathedral)

Senior libero Kayla Yew averaged 6.33 digs per set in a 4-0 Carnegie Mellon University weekend. She recorded a season-high 36 digs in a five-set win over State University of New York at Geneseo. In the four matches, Yew totaled 95 digs, 13 assists, and five service aces.

Kelsey Kraetz  —  NYU  —  Skaneateles, NY (Skaneateles)

Senior middle blocker Kelsey Kraetz averaged 1.27 blocks per set to lead NYU to a 4-0 mark at the New York Region Challenge. She also hit .306 with 1.27 kills per set. Kraetz totaled seven kills and seven blocks in a four-set Violets’ victory over host Rochester Institute of Technology.

Women’s Swimming and Diving

Yunfan Dong  —  University of Chicago  —  Schenectady, NY (Niskayuna)

University of Chicago first-year swimmer Yunfan Dong won the 100-yard backstroke (58.38 seconds) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:08.23) in the Maroons’ dual meet with Carthage College. The Maroons dominated the meet, winning 233.5-66.5.

Agnes Lo  —  University of Chicago  —  Fremont, CA (Mission San Jose)

University of Chicago senior diver Agnes Lo won the one-meter dive (266.49 points) and placed second on the three-meter board (233.93) in the Maroons’ dual meet victory over Carthage College.

Men’s Swimming and Diving

Keda Song  —  University of Chicago  —  East Greenwich, RI (Classical)

Junior Keda Song won the 200-yard individual medley (1:55.07) and the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:07.17) to help University of Chicago to a dual meet victory over Carthage College.

Andrew Chen  —  University of Chicago  —  Oakland Gardens, NY (Bronx HS of Science)

University of Chicago freshman diver Andrew Chen swept the diving events in the Maroons’ dual meet win over Carthage College. He won the one-meter dive with a score of 261.90 points and finished first on the three-meter board with a mark of 266.40.

Wrestling

Jacob Frisch  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Belle Mead, NJ (Montgomery)

Case Western Reserve University senior Jacob Frisch earned a major decision victory during the Cleveland Clash, hosted by Cleveland State University. He claimed a 19-7 win over his John Carroll University opponent at 133 pounds.

They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
