Athletes of the Week for December 5, 2022

Women’s Soccer – Offense

Camryn Hartman  —  Case Western Reserve University —  Cleveland, OH (Magnificat)

Case Western Reserve graduate student forward Camryn Hartman was named to the NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Championship All-Tournament Team as the Spartans advanced to the national title match. She netted the game-winning goal in a 3-0 semifinal victory over Virginia Wesleyan University on Friday. Hartman finished the season with 14 goals and 10 assists.

Women’s Soccer – Defense

Lexi Gomez  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Olmsted Falls, OH (Olmsted Falls)

Case Western Reserve senior defender Lexi Gomez was named to the NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Championship All-Tournament Team as the Spartans advanced to the national title match. She keyed the defense that limited Virginia Wesleyan University to four shots on goal in a 3-0 semifinal win.

Men’s Soccer – Offense

Robbie Pino  —  University of Chicago  —  Southlake, TX (Southlake Carroll)

University of Chicago junior midfielder Robbie Pino scored the game-winning goal in the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Championship final, a 2-0 Maroons’ victory over Williams College. He was selected to the all-tournament team and named the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Championship Offensive Most Outstanding Player.

Men’s Soccer – Defense

Griffin Wada  —  University of Chicago  —  Villanova, PA (The Haverford School)

University of Chicago senior defender Griffin Wada was selected to the all-tournament team and named the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Championship Defensive Most Outstanding Player. He anchored the defense that posted back-to-back shutouts to give the Maroons their first NCAA title with a 1-0 win over Stevens Institute of Technology in the national semifinal and a 2-0 victory over Williams College in the title match.

Women’s Basketball

Claire Brock  —  Emory University  —  Knoxville, TN (Christian Academy of Knoxville)

Senior Claire Brock recorded a game-high 20 points to lead Emory University to a 70-55 win over 11th-ranked Tufts University on Saturday. She added five rebounds, while shooting 43.8 percent from the field (7-for-16), and made all four of her free throws. 

Men’s Basketball

Toby Harris  —  Brandeis University  —  Durham, NC (Durham Academy)

Sophomore forward Toby Harris averaged 21.0 points, 8.3 rebounds, 1.7 assists, and 1.7 steals per game in a 2-1 Brandeis University week. He totaled 20 points and eight boards in a 76-70 win over Emerson College, the Judges’ sixth consecutive victory to begin the season. In two games in the UAA-NESCAC Challenge, Harris averaged 21.5 points and 8.5 rebounds, hitting six of 14 three-pointers. He posted a career-high 13 boards in a 68-58 win over Bates College on Sunday.

Women’s Swimming and Diving

Taylor Leone  —  Emory University  —  Hilliard, OH (Hilliard Darby)

Emory University graduate student Taylor Leone won two individual events and swam on four victorious relays at the Denison University Invitational. Her winning time of 55.03 seconds in the 100-yard butterfly ranks first in NCAA Division III this season, while her time of 22.93 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle ranks second. Leone swam anchor on the Eagles’ victorious 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays, and swam the butterfly leg of the 200- and 400-yard medley relays. All four relays recorded the fastest times in Division III this season.

Meera Kasturi  —  NYU  —  White Plains, NY (The Hotchkiss School, CT)

NYU first-year diver Meera Kasturi swept the boards at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute LGR! Invitational. She exceeded the NCAA Division III regional qualifying marks in both events, capturing the three-meter dive with a score of 492.10 points and the one-meter board with a score of 453.70.

Men’s Swimming and Diving

Pat Pema  —  Emory University  —  Columbus, OH (St. Charles)

Senior Pat Pema won all three of his individual events, provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Division III Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships in each, and swam on three Emory University winning relays at the Denison University Invitational. He posted the top Division III times this season in the 200- (1:35.92) and 500-yard (4:22.82) freestyles, while also capturing the 100-yard freestyle (44.60 seconds). Pema swam on the 400- (2:57.03) and 800-yard (6:35.67) freestyle relays that registered the nation’s top time this season, and the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:20.31) that ranks second this season.

Hunter Whitbeck  —  NYU  —  Acton, MA (Acton-Boxborough Regional)

Senior Hunter Whitbeck of NYU swept the diving events at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute LGR! Invitational. He met the NCAA Division III regional qualifying marks in both events, capturing the three-meter dive with a score of 489.60 points after winning the one-meter board with a mark of 481.30.

David Robinson  —  University of Rochester  —  Pittsford, NY (Pittsford Sutherland)

Junior David Robinson broke the University of Rochester record in the one-meter dive at the Ithaca College Bomber Invitational. His score of 497.25 points broke the previous mark set in 2019, earned him a first-place finish, and ranks third in NCAA Division III this season. Robinson placed second in the three-meter event with a score of 463.10 as the Yellowjackets won the event title for the first time in five attempts.

Women’s Indoor Track and Field

Annika Urban  —  Emory University  —  Pittsburgh, PA (Fox Chapel)

Senior Annika Urban broke the Emory University record in the 5,000-meter run by nearly a minute while facing NCAA Division I competition at the Boston University Sharon Colyear Danville Season Opener. She won her heat with a time of 16:29.14, obliterating the previous mark by 59 seconds, ranking first in NCAA Division III this year, and ranks seventh all-time in Division III.

Liz Barre  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Ithaca, NY (Taft)

Senior Liz Barre broke her own Carnegie Mellon University record in the high jump while placing third in the pentathlon with 3,367 points at the Bucknell University Bison Opener. She cleared the high jump bar in 1.67 meters, the top height in NCAA Division III over the weekend. 

Ebun Opata  —  Washington University  —  London, England (St. Andrew’s Episcopal School, MS)

Junior Ebun Opata of Washington University finished first in the triple jump and long jump at the University of Indianapolis Seasonal Invitational. Her distance of 11.97 meters ranks second in NCAA Division III in the triple jump and her mark of 5.61 meters in the long jump ranks third after the opening weekend.

Men’s Indoor Track and Field

Jackson Price  —  Emory University  —  Denver, CO (Regis Jesuit)

Emory University sophomore Jackson Price posted a sub-seven second mark in the 60-meter dash against NCAA Division I competition at the Boston University Sharon Colyear Danville Season Opener. He posted a top-20 NCAA Division III time of 6.99 seconds to finish ninth overall and first among Division III competitors.

Henry Brandstadter  —  Emory University  —  Philadelphia, PA (Springside Chestnut Hill Academy)

Freshman Henry Brandstadter established a new Emory University record in the long jump in his first collegiate meet against NCAA Division I competition at the Boston University Sharon Colyear Danville Season Opener. His leap of 7.20 meters broke the nearly 30-year record of 7.18 meters and gave him a runner-up finish with the third-best mark in NCAA Division III over the weekend. Brandstadter also placed fifth in the high jump (1.90 meters).

Wrestling

Jason Geyer  —  NYU  —  Cranberry Township, PA (Seneca Valley)

Senior Jason Geyer won all three of his bouts at 174 pounds as NYU swept dual matches with wins over 15th-ranked Rhode Island College, Western New England University, and previously unbeaten host Roger Williams University. He earned a pair of falls, including one at 0:00 versus Western New England and an 11-3 major decision over his opponent from Roger Williams.
