Strong First Half Leads Tartans Past Wooster, 78-40

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team hosted the College of Wooster Thursday evening in a non-conference game and defeated the Fighting Scots, 70-48. The Tartans are now 2-3 for the season while Wooster drops to 1-2.

Four Tartans scored in double figures with senior Makayla Filiere (Chandler, Ariz. / Hamilton) leading with 16 points. Sophomore Leah Weslock (Howell, Mich. / Howell) and senior Laurel Pereira (Naperville, Ill. / Naperville North) each had 12 points while sophomore Caitlyn Clendenin (Bethesda, Md. / Bethesda Chevy Chase) had 10 points. Filiere picked up six steals and dished out four assists with Weslock giving out five assists while pulling down a team-high eight rebounds.

The Tartans led 22-8 at the conclusion of the first quarter after shooting 47.4% from the floor and holding the Fighting Scots to 19.0% and causing nine turnovers. Pereira scored six points on 3-of-5 shooting for the quarter while senior Megan Jaeb (San Jose, Calif. / Presentation) put in two buckets and a free throw for five points.

The lead extended to 28 points by halftime with the Tartans continuing to shot well from the floor, making 10-of-16 attempts and assisting on seven baskets. Senior Cameron Pitts (Frederick, Md. / Oakdale) had six points in the quarter and nine points for the half.

The Tartans pressured Wooster into 15 turnovers in the second half to score a total of 32 points off turnovers for the game and held them scoreless in the fourth quarter.
